24 Speed to 8 Speed

I've recently bought a 2006 Trek Jack 2 and it's set up as a 24 speed bike. I'm looking into changing it to 8 speed and I'm kind of lost and dont know where to start. What components do I need and what prices am I going to be looking at? Thanks a ton.

well what exactly do you mean by 8 speed...you just wanna run a single up front? Not too bad just kill your front derailur and replace your BB and crankset with a single you could go with like a hussefelt or a modified BMX crankset
Yea I'm gonna run a single up front
There are a few ways this can be done. The easiest is to simply buy a new crankset with only one chainring and a bashguard(I highly recommend one anyway). Depending on the crankset and chainrings you have, you can also remove the big and the granny ring, and keep only the middle ring, and run it that way(bashguard is again something i'd highly recommend.)
you don't need an entirely new crankset and bottom bracket?!

just pick up a chainguide and SS ring that is compatible with whatever (bontrager, I'm assuming as oem on your trek) bolt pattern you are currently running (and this is assuming your bb spindle can clear your chainstay with the chainguide). Probably a 4bolt 104mm... take a look at the blackspire chainguides for example, some might even come with a chainring as well I believe, but could be wrong.
YA, you dont need a whole new crankset/BB to go single ring. Just buy a Chainguide (Top ones are E13 and MRP), replace the big ring with the bash guard, remove the small ring and your set. Then just put on the chainguide.
if you want to go the cheap way, just take out the inner ring, take out the outer, leave the middle, and use the deraileur as the guide;) and maybe put on a bashgaurd.

You don't even have to go that far. Chainguide isn't needed, I run a 1X8 setup with an N-Gear chain stop (replaces front derailleur, works as a guide, about $8) and a Surly SS 32t chain ring. You don't even need a new chainring, but one made for it will last much longer.

Chainguide will obviously be better, but personally I rarely drop a chain & don't feel the need to spend $100+ and add more weight to my already 36lb bike.
on the trek site it shows the jack 2 as already having a bashgaurd and a dual ring setup.no granny.so how do you have a 24 speed?is the site wrong?
Sometimes companies run out of parts and put whatever's left in their warehouse in the boxes they send to the lbs. That's why my 416 has s-types instead of MTX's, titel el norte bars instead of hussfelts and blah blah blah.

s-types = oem, mtx = aftermarket, eighttrack = factory complete wheelset. all the same rims, different stickers
