Just finished 24hrs of Adrenaline in Canmore. Our team got third in our category but they only gave prizes to first and second. WTF? That was a slap in the face. It was like that for every category. Is this standard practice for them? I guess they have to maximize profit.

Over the years, I've learned to expect little to nothing for a team podium finish...

I enter with the idea that I'll have fun and if we happen to place and they give us more than a t-shirt, bonus!

Same thought process here; however, I was dissapointed with the men's T shirts they gave away. Dark brown/faded black, ugh. Give me the volunteer green, please.

I was pleased with the sample packs - I think I had too many though!

IMO, a good prize would be free 24 Hour jerseys for each team member, as well as a free entrance fee to the next Canmore event (2011)
Congratulations on the finish.

Wow, that would be a good prize.

I don't think the lack of prizes is so much a reflection of the Canmore organization, what you saw is pretty typical across N. America (of course there are always exceptions). I've done about 10 x 24hr solos in Canada and the US as well as a few team 24hr solos and I've never seen prizes as rich as that for a 3rd place team category finish. In some events I've been to, for a 3rd place team category finish you would have got to stand on a podium and have your picture taken... if one of your friends had a camera handy and they weren't too busy drinking a beer.

Enjoy the racing, anything else is a bonus.

I have a lot of respect for the soloists. I think its probably one of the hardest athletic feats around.

I was under the impression that all 24 hours of Adrenaline events were run by the same people but bolstered by local volunteers? I heard 24hrs has a really bad relationship with the local trail building association.

It was also really impressive how fast people move out of the way. I only really had one person hold me up at all.

Yeah, I was pretty content with finishing third (5person U149), this being my first one and none of my team mates are actually cyclists either. (Only bike for cross-training). We did at least get a medal, but I would have rather gotten something functional, though.

24hrs as a soloist is pretty hard but so is banging out fast team laps, they are just different kinds of hard. I think anyone who's out there giving it a solid effort deserves a thumbs up, particularly on that course as it was fairly abusive in sections.

There's quite a few 24's across N.A. and they are run by large and small organizations. Some of the grassroots events are really fun and have a different feel than Canmore - not better, just different.

If 24hrs of Adrenalin has a bad relationship with the local trail building association (whoever that is???) it would be news to me, but I don't really keep my finger on the pulse of those kinds of things. Given that the event took place at the Nordic Centre, which as I understand it is a Government of Alberta asset, I would have thought the trails were developed by the Nordic Centre not a local trail building association. But again, I could be wrong. I do know that 24hrs of Adrenalin has worked hand in hand with IMBA to do trail development for the trails we rode on and makes donations to trail development at the Nordic Centre.

You guys sure did well for a bunch of cross-trainers. The medals might not seem important now but believe me your kids or grandkids will get a kick out of them, so hang on to them. My kids always bug me for medals after every race, I always get an 'awwwww daaaaaddddd' if I can't produce.

Won a 12 hour solo out here and got a tube of chamois cream and 2 gels.
At least they had a sense of humour, and I guess I needed it!!!.
In my experience prizes vary a lot sometimes they're great, sometimes they're lame.
I have to assume no promoter actually sets out to deliberately give us something bad - they do what they have to do and I am just glad someone is running races...

I dont know how practical it is, but I like the free entry idea.

Have to agree with the OP. The current version of 24hours of adrenalin is a far cry from a few years ago. Do a quick search and you will quickly find the nasty mess which this company was invovled in. Previous versions used to have a large expo area, great tech support (paul and eric you did great though(rad bikes)) and fun giveaways. Movies, popcorn and prizes for best campsite, best costumes....

Around 2005 it all fell apart.

Do some quick math. 1650 riders (rough guess) 125 per person equals
206250.00. Cost to rent the Nordic Centre ???. Insurance? Medical? Prizes? Staff? Website (was not upgraded all year), Course design? Food for volunteers? T shirts? Donations to IMBA, Issabel.

Pretty sure the interest (event is sold out year in advance) on the roughly 200 grand covers a chunk of those costs. So my guess is Stuart is making a chunk of cash. Nothing wrong with that but at least put a little effort into making the event fun.

The first 24 adrenalin event in calafornia this year was a no show. Canmore is a sure sell out. The next event is back to Hurkey park. The website currently has not been updated so it dosn't look good. Next year? 24 hours is down to two events and the solo thing. They used to have way more. Stuart...lower the entry fees, lower the expo fees (5000g for a spot), offer more prizes and let people have fun. The course was great this year but the actual event was lacking.

There are two groups building trails at the Nordic Centre. One is local and the Nordic Centre itself. The new trails are a definte improvement. Some locals seem to think otherwise.

I don't want to appear like I'm defending 24HOA, because that's not my goal. My only point in this post is to say I'm not too focused on the prizes, or what I get in my swag bag, if I get something it's a bonus but it's not what I'm there for. I'm there to race/have fun on my bike, usually with other people I know, on decent trails, with a good supporting infrastructure.

24hrs of Adrenalin met all of those objectives on the weekend.

The first 24HOA I did was around 1998 (I think) at Hardwood Hills and I've done a few since then with that organization. I don't care how much anyone makes, how big the expo area is and I'm not sure how the 'nasty mess' is relevant. I don't have a crystal ball so I can't see into the future and what will happen with 24HOA next year but I do know this year (and last) was a tough one on race promoters, you only have to look at how many other organizations canceled events. My fingers are crossed that there are more endurance events rather than less.

If I thought it was too expensive to do 24HOA I wouldn't sign up for them. If I thought it was poorly run I wouldn't sign up. If I had complaints I would email them to Stuart.

Three days after a poor Solo performance weekend and I'm already thinking about signing up for next years Solo in Canmore, because I see value in them.

Prizes for a 24 hour race? Most of the stuff that I've ever won has been given away by the next day. I keep the race plates with the mud on and tack 'em up in the basement with a note on them about place and distances and conditions and how badly i sucked at this race etc. I look at them every so often and they mean more to me then the rest of the stuff.
I do agree with the OP though that if you're going to stand on the podium then it is nice to be handed at least a token prize. Better for the Adrenalin guys to have cheaped out a bit on first and second and come up with a prize for third then to annoy you with nothing. But you'll get over it.

I was curious about some of the things you've said so I sent Stuart an email asking about the little stuff like:

Popcorn: It was there both Friday and Saturday evening, right next to the Exposure Lights booth. I never saw it as I was too whacked from racing all through the night.

Movies: He had some new movies to show but someone broke into their transport truck and stole a pile of stuff, including the coax cables for the projector. They scrambled into Canmore to get some cables, bought some replacements but they weren't long enough.

I didn't ask about prized for costume or campsite, maybe you can send him an email on that.

I was pretty surprised at the expo fee you stated, $5000 seems pretty high but I don't run events so I have no idea what is normal. I asked Stuart about that amount, specifically what he charged the Hammer Nutrition guys since they seemed to have the biggest rig in the expo area. He said he arranged for them to have that spot for $750, he told them he didn't want any of that money, instead they should cut the cheque directly to IMBA Canada. Seems like a righteous thing to do and I don't think anybody would ever hear that story unless I posted it up here. If you are really curious to see if that is factual you could contact the Hammer guys and get the word from them or drop Stuart a line.

The 5000 quote came from folks who asked Stuart about expo costs.
Actual expo costs where cheaper when the event got to town and there was no real expo.

The OP had asked if the current 24 hours in Canmore was standard practice. I personally think earlier versions of the 24 hours where more fun, with a lot more happening.

There's Expo Costs and then there's Expo Costs ...

All depends on what you're getting, where you'll be, and at the end of the day, its a value for money decision for the purchaser.

For example, at the World Solo Champs and Scott 24 Hour in Canberra, Australia this year, there are 3 main areas in the centre of the event village:

. Sponsors. They get prime position and their site size and fitout is by negotiation.

. Expo Sites. These are $3500 and that includes a 6m x 6m marquee with power, light, heating, tables, chairs. At an Expo Site you can conduct trade (ie, sell things). These are close to the centre of the action, but not as close as the sponsors.

. Team Sites. These are $2000 and also include the same fitted out marquee package, but you can't conduct trade. You can give stuff away. These are the further away from the centre of the transition action.

Ultimately, its a decision for the organiser about pricing. These sites cost $$ and servicing the site occupants also costs $$. But, having an empty event centre also detracts from the feel of the event.
