solo 24? if you have the ability to change your gearing, i'd start 32x16 and ease up as necessary. if not i'd run 32x18 for the whole thing.
if you're doing a team event i'd try to push 32x16 for the whole thing.
i ran 32x18 on a 4-man team and hated it.

Anything steep enough with the 16 to have to get off the bike? Are soloists allowed to change gearing throughout the race?

I don't think it's illegal....just taboo, get there with enough time to preride, and put a gear on that'll be sporty enough at 4am...

I've run 38x16 on a 26r(solo 24) there in the past w/mixed results...likely 36 or 38x18(rigid 29er, solo 24) for me this year...depends on how the course feels thurs b/f...see ya out there
