$23.88 - Would You Ride It?

Had a 40mm Thomson stem on, but wanted to try something a little Longer.

Found this, perfectly matching beauty, for 24 bucks.

Haven’t ridden it yet. Whaddya think? I hate catastrophic failures as much as the next guy, but…

Well given the history of Thompson stems, probably less likely to fail...🤪

Based on the cutaways:the price you paid, abso-fucking-lutely not.

Maybe pavement.

The amount of steerer above the stem scares me more.

Oil slick? Ew.
It says “high fatigue life” right on it.

And it even has a signature!
Probably not ... The "High Fatigue Life" warning is a tad bit terrifying as somebody already pointed out, and I'm 43 so I'd look like an idiot.
yeah, but you go first!

Well, most rigid single speeders ride too slow on downhills to break stuff… :ROFLMAO:

(BMX-ers categorically excluded, of course)

The price isn't the worry, but the source.
Hard pass on this and any and all other similar components. But especially a stem. It would ruin my rides thinking about it, even if nothing ever happened.

Not sure, maybe? Where did you buy it from?
I never spend big money on stems, I always buy something in the 30-35$ range and i've never had a problem. The Ritchey comp stem on my gravel bike was 32$, the Cube stem on my full sus was 30$, and i'm guessing they passed the same safety tests as 100$+ bling stems?
Or maybe not and i'm a dead man walking?
As long as it's not carbon, I'd ride it with no second thoughts and just check it periodically for cracks like I do with all my bikes.

Love the bike color BTW. I'm tired of black bikes.

Nope. I watched a couple youtube vids and both had burrs that needed to be filed down. One stem would spin on the steerer unless torqued 6x past the recommended value (also had cracked bolts?). I'm guessing that if you don't have issues then it's probably ok, but I wouldn't put something on my bike with such low standards/qc.
You should be fine. Just make sure you ride with no hands.

Stem is ok, but how do you ride this without EEWINGS?

Ha - hope not.

I’d been a Thomson and/or Ritchey WCS fanboy for decades, then decided to try a FUNN stem from Amazon. Less than 50 bucks and rock solid on another rigid SS. So I bought another for my CX bike. Also rock solid. So I thought what the heck with this thing from Amazon…. The color is just awful enough to be cool. Still haven’t ridden it yet, but I will.

EeWings I’ve owned. Not a fan. But you’re right that their oil slick finish would be over the top!
