I bought some new wheels and i think the guy gave me a rear wheel for a 24 speed instead of one for a 21 speed. The reason i think this is because the shaft that the cassette slides onto is longer than my original one and when i tighten down the lockring the cassette has room to slide back and forth. I am new to switching out cassettes so forgive me if i sound stupid.

Call it 7 speed or 8 speed. Did you request a 7 speed rear hub? The 8 and 9 speed cassettes use the same freehub body but 7 speed freehubs don't.
