2021 Trance X Advanced Prob2 29er max chainring size

Howdy y'all,

I recently got a new 2021 Trance X Adv 2 29er (lg) as an upgrade/supplement to my old XC bike. My old bike has a 30t ring with 11-36 cassette. The Trance is also 30t (SRAM NX eagle), with 11-50 cassette. I would like to put a larger chainring on the trance.

On my old XC bike, I almost never need the 0.83 ratio but nice to have, however would really would like more than 2.73 for fast rides. It looks like I could in theory go up to 40t+ and still be 'easier' than my XC. (It looks like the NX Eagle maxes at 38t.) The thing is, I don't know what will fit. Local shops all out of stock.

Has anyone upgraded their chainring on this bike, or know of a max size that will work with the bike (large frame)? The chainstay curves a bit and I'm unsure if there is a max size factoring clearance, suspension, etc. Thanks!

No insight into your actual question about max chainring size, but (and I hope this isn't insulting - one never knows what an internet stranger might know), have you considered not just the ratios but also the gear inches? If your old bike wasn't a 29er, the effort required for the same ratios will be significantly higher.

I ask because 38T is enough for most XC pros in most circumstances. Granted, they will have a 10T small cog, but many of them run smaller rings on their bikes.

Thanks! I appreciate the pointers! As for the size, yep, the old XC bike is a 29er. I've ridden both on some steep climbs and subtle geometry aside, they feel pretty much the same. The main goal is to get more speed for the roads, smooth track, gravel, greenways, etc. I can't really go bigger on my XC due to cassette range.

I'm thinking of just ordering a 34t or possibly 36t. That should give me enough additional range for most things. 36t might be about ideal, I wouldn't really go 40t even if available, I was just plugging the numbers in to see what would give me the same ratio in lowest gear.

Another factor I hadn't considered - do I need to replace the chain as well due to additional length? I guess I could run it and see how much slack is there. Probably a good idea to have a spare chain anyway.
Ah cool. That totally makes sense if road and gravel-type rides feature in your frequent activities.

I’m a terrible mechanic, so take anything else I say with a grain of salt, but I think you’re right that you will need more links in your chain one way or another if you go to a bigger ring.
