Anyone try running the 2021 stumpy with a shorter travel front fork ? Like 130mm or 120mm. If so lmk if you like it ! What pros and cons of me going down to 130. ?

I'd strongly advise against it as the Geo is at it's best with the 140mm Fork. Lowering it will change your body position, lower the bottom bracket and weight the front more/rear less.

Why not just get an Epic Evo?

I mostly agree with this except the part about lowering the bottom bracket. Yeah, it's gonna happen but giving up 10 mm of fork travel isn't going to change the BB height that much, maybe not even enough to be noticeable to most riders. 20 mm is a more significant change, but I still worry more about shifting weight forward than any effect on the BB height.

OP: why do you want to make this change, do you feel like you're not using enough of the travel on your trails? Or is it something else?

I want a more XC bike. Steepen the HA for a nibble ride and I could go with a lighter fork. That’s the biggest difference. Can’t believe 130 to 140mm forks have a big weight difference. It’s like they in a different class. Wouldn’t shifting weight to the front being more traction?

Why not just get an Epic Evo?
To late for epic. Have the SJ. Which I love. I’m trying to lighten up the front end. With a light fork and light wheel. I do mostly Trail /xc riding. Typically don’t use all of the 140 unless I’m jumping which dosnt happen much. Want speed ! Want to turn faster ! Climb faster ! Want flats to feel faster. Bike feels so slugish on flats !

Generally speaking, you want your weight pretty much centered on the bike most of the time. Biasing your weight forward just means you'll have to move around on the bike more to find the front/rear balance that's appropriate for the terrain you're riding at the time.

According to a 5 second Google search, changing your fork travel 20 mm is roughly equivalent to changing the HT angle one degree. How does changing fork travel affect geometry?
I doubt that's going to be enough of a difference to turn your 2021 SJ into a XC machine.

I raced a 2014 SJ Evo with a 120mm fork. Had the bike at about 23.5 lbs and found I could pretty much ignore trail features that were previously concerning. It worked quite well. Wasn't long till Specialized came out with the ST versions of the SJ quieting the many who said, "Oh no....the frame wasn't designed for that fork" or "it voids the warranty" and such. Put whatever fork you want on the bike and make your own decision.

I still go down some tech stuff. So Don’t need a fully XC bike. Just want to optimize my bike. I see many trail bikes with 130 in front. Don’t see why I can’t. Wanted to see if anyone here has done it on SJ and get a feedback.

I like your Mentality ! Thank you ! If I go don’t to 120mm I can buy the step cast from fox. ! Which is like 1400g! Crazy. 1.5lb shaved

2022 F34 is already 7mm taller axle to crown compared to 2021 at the same travel. At 130 the new fork is only 3mm shorter than the one this bike was designed for. This is 1mm extra BB drop. Plus 2022 can probably ride higher in the travel (with higher pressure) and be equally plush.

To me the BB is too low even with 140. So I ride in a high position. I see no problem to ride at 130. In a high setting and even with the older F34, that will be 77 degree seat, 66 degree head and a perfect BB height (336-337-ish). What not to like?

Can I apply the same rule to the 2022 34 step cast ? It’s 120mm. So should be only 6mm lower ?

Here is your problem, you got a lyrik. Change it to pike and you will see the difference (or maybe wait few months for the updated 2022 stuff, i heard they made the pike lighter), also what wheels do you use? they effect the riding a lot too

Nice ! Well I do have time. You know the time frame for Pike? As of right now I have cheap Shimano m6120 wheels. I just ordered a front wheel from Colorado cycle. Front wheel should be under 800g.

Different bike than your '14 model.
