I'm googling like crazy but having a hard time finding the exact changes to the 2016 frame.

I know the 2016 moves to boost. Is that it? I'd actually rather not have boost so I can use my existing wheels.

Has anyone B+'d a 2015 horsethief? Are the rear clearances similar or did they make big changes to fit 3.0 tires?

I think the only change is the rear triangle with boost, same main. I would be shocked to see a b+ 3.0 in the '15 rear... my 2.35 nobby nic doesn't leave much room.

The HT 2016 frame will be exactly the same frame like the PonyRustler.
HT will have 29" wheels, PR 27.5+ wheels.

So both bikes can take both wheels sizes but I wonder how Salsa manages the BB height change.

Hey maettu,

Yeah I know the 2016 PR and HT are the same. I'm wondering how the 2015 would do as a plus.

Interesting. Do you mean to the chainstays? Because the b+ will be a bit shorter than the 2.35 nn.

I saw a picture of a 2015 spearfish with a WTB 2.8 trailblazer but no details on the clearence

I'll post a photograph next time I am around my so you can get an idea of the clearance.

That is one well worn nobby nic!

That is pretty tight, but the height clearance wouldn't be a problem, just the sides. Hmmm

I was told that a 2.8TB measured out at 63mm on Blunts. I am trying a 2.5 Minion DHF on my 2014 right now on Asym i35 rims and it measures at 62mm! There isn't much clearance, like 4-5mm max, definatelty have to stay away from mud. In fact I'm considering going to a Trail boss 2.4 or even back to 2.35 in the rear.

Fyi, with some measuring we determined there is about a 3/4 inch BB drop if you go to B+. That was more concerning to me (based on my trails) than clearance.

Little info for ya'll:

2015 HT features about 70mm of width between the stays and relies on standard MTB chainline. We can only recommend tires that yield at least 6mm clearance all round, so ~58mm+/- is the stated max.

2016 HT/PR features a little over 90mm of width in the same area and requires a +3mm boost chainline for chainring clearance. This allows the max tire width to increase to 76mm (3.0") sticking with a 6mm or more rule (it's acutally more like 8mm which is improved mud clearance)

Lastly, not all 27.5-plus tires are created equal, and don't rely on stated sizes, try to find actual measurements. We found the 2016 HT/PR to ride the best with the larger 27.5-plus tires that measure 74-76mm wide and average around 730mm in diameter. The smaller tires (66-72mm) did not offer enough performance increase in traction or volume compared to a standard size tire and the resulting smaller diameters (some sub-720mm!) exacerbated the BB height change on a 29er frame(s) originally designed for a 740mm wheel diameter. With the true 2.95-3.0" tires the 2016 HT/PR frame compensates for the 5mm loss in BB height with a 10mm longer fork length to effectively raise the BB back to the same place it was compared to the 15 HT 29er. The 2016 frames were updated and tested for this increase in fork length.

Does the increased tire clearance on the 2016 horsethief/ponyrustler mean that it will better fit a 29 x 2.5 tire, such as the maxis minion DHF on a 35mm internal rim (like cobi above was running)? Or is it just the width clearance that is increased?

Just the width. The limiting factor for 29er tires in this frame is the overall diameter, which is dictated by the suspension layout and the clearance between the S/S and back of the seat tube at full bottom out, and to the C/S bridge and driveside yoke. Max recommended tire diameter is Ø745mm, which equates to most 29x2.4 tires.
