2011 Roval Control EL 29 w/ 18 Star ratchet?

2048 Views 9 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  dubdryver
Last week at LBS Rep. nite I spoke with two Specialized Reps. about the Roval Control EL 29 wheels. I asked if they came with the 36 point engagement, as this was important to me. They said yes the wheel set will. I've notice other folks here who bought new Rovals EL's and they got the 36 tooth also.

No dice for me! 18 engagement points! I'm really bummed. That was the selling point over the Stan's wheels too.

Thanks.

just get the 36 step star ratchet upgrade kit for a dt swiss 240
my carbon rovals only came with 18 pts so I feel your pain
your local bike shop should be able to get you the part from QBP

Just purchase the 36pt star ratchets:

I added them to my Roval Traverse EL wheelset. Very easy to swap them.

Sucks that the Specialized reps told you wrong... maybe Spec will send your LBS the 36-pt ratchets if you complain. If not, it is only $20-30 bucks to buy the new ratchets yourself and it only takes about 5 minutes to swap them.

Does anybodies LBS actually have stuff like this in stock?
I wouldn't worry about it for two reasons:

1. It's an inexpensive fix and you can easily convert any 240-based hub. I've learned how to do it myself. The right grease and proper amount of grease is key

2. The 36-points aren't without their trade-offs. They require more maintenance (grease) and based on personal experience they are more prone to slip. I'd rather have 18 solid points of engagement than 36 that will occasionally slip and eventually fail altogether. I just got the carbon Rovals and was surprised to learn that they have the 36-point. This is my 5th 240 rear hub and I was actually a little disappointed that it didn't come with 18. I was told that these ratchets have been improved but I swear I've felt them slip 3 times in 30 miles of riding. I am gradually converting my other hubs back to 18-point.

If it takes even 5min. You can pick it up from Universal Cycles, speedgoat, and many others...just do a google search in www.froogle.com (google shopping) My control ELs didn't come with it, but it was the first thing I did to those wheels...and really it is a very inexpensive great upgrade!
