Well ????? you must have ridden it today
That bike looks GREAT!!! My Marathon Alloy frame came in on Saturday and is being built up this week. Enjoy that sweet bike!
I got one good ride in before the rain hit and I'm still tweeking things around. Overall it seems real similar to my 2000 S-Works FSR with the FOX Float X fork and at the same time its a little better everywhere. Stiffer with more accel on the climbs and better pedal to the ground power on flats and rollers. Out here in the sand and loose rock I don't the the specialized captain front tire at all, I'm used to IRC mythos and I need to get bar ends for some of the climbs. The sram shifters take a little to get used to comming from XTR but seem positive and fast and the breaks are awsome. The bars seem really narrow and I measured them and they are the same size as my old bike so maybe an illusion. - Jim
Awesome beauty! Rider her like you stole her.
Mine should be here in a couple days - can't wait. Anyone know if the S-WORKS crank will slide right in ? Want to go 2x9 - what do you think ?
They will be able to. Are you wanting to run SRAM XX? If so, you need to think about the gearing. The stock 39 /26 up front is great for the trail, but not for road or flat trail riding. You lose a lot of top end speed. If you want a bigger chainring, then you will need a different front derailed since they are direct mount.
My bad, I meant to say the wieght is 23.0 lbs with pedels. - Jim

you mean 24.75 lbs right?
I have a scale on order, I wieghed it in the shop at 25 with pedels and some extra plastic, so 24.75 is probable correct. I thought that was high and miss read the scale.
She's wicked sharp ! 23.25lbs as it sits. s works crank went on slick [ 26x42 ] first ride will be on snow tomorrow.should be good. I'm all kinds of jacked up. been riding a superfly so this bird should feel a snappy little rocket ship

guvna, what all did you replace, I see a carbon seat post and is that the complete crank set with XX or just the arm's. - Jim
Hey Jimmi i changed the seat post and put on a FSA stem, xtr cog set, made it tube less and the cranks are stock s works 170mm - 26x42 spec rings and spyder. Cranks come with bb and all parts needed.
Jimmi, by the way- i was just in Cali riding the road bike around Orinda for a week, you have some steep ass hills out there
Nice 2x9 setup! I love them!

How about those lock on grips with the carbon bars? I upgraded the bars on my bike to the carbons, and the lock-on slipped a bit, i was worried about putting too much torque on the clamps with carbon bars.

Guvna, after coming from a Hardtail 29er, i am interested to hear thoughts going to a 26" full suspension race rocket, i love my 29er wheels, and I am hoping for a carbon 29er epic for 2011.

I wasn't too worried about cranking the grips down when I had mine off, I did however install the AL end caps before installing the bar ends. - Jim
Ok, this bike rules the earth. Climbs like a hard tail and descends like a couch. It's going to take a little to dial in the shocks, especially the fork. The gearing of the 2x9 [26-42] feels really good on the first ride
Coming out of switch back corners feels more snappy than my superfly. I think the 29er feels more stable than the 26er, especially a hard tail. But i think unless you are climbing something really steep, the perception of the difference between 29er and 26er is just that - perception more than reality.
The fit of the small epic is spot on for me and i really like to get out of the saddle a lot when i climb so a stiff front and rear feel awesome. And when you break thru the thresholdT it is uber plush. The handling is very neutral and feels balanced .
It's only been one ride but i love it
