So this year i decided to buy a new 29" stumpy and came to realise how much i like the 1X12 gearing so does anyone have any advice on what i can do to update the 2009 stumpy fsr comp to something similar 1X?

The 11 speed Shimano cassette should fit on your existing hub. If your crank can take a 104 BCD narrow wide ring...you're good to go. On top of the cassette...you'll need the 11 speed rear derailleur, shifter, chain, and a narrow wide chainring.

You can basically have 12 speed gearing with 11 speed if you go with an e13 9-44 or larger cassette.

You really don't need the 12sp. Shimano has an 11-46 cassette. Its only 4 teeth less than SRAM (or 5 less if you're looking at the Shimano 12sp) on the low gear than a 12sp. What gives the 12sp the larger range is the 10T cog. You can just run a 30T up front to get a similar low gear as the 12sp with a 32T up front. Unless you plan on pedaling at 30+mph on a regular basis...the 11T shouldn't be a deal breaker.

You can also go with 10-speed and get the same gearing. Your 2009 might already be 10-speed, so you might only need cassette, chain, clutch derailleur and narrow-wide chainring. Would save only the shifter, but that's something. Check out new Shimano Deore m6000 series.

Not sure why you should't go 12x? I put an 12X SRAM NX cassette on the rear wheel of my 2003 Specialized epic (originally 9 speed) that then went on a 2006 Titus Motolite. The cassette fit without a problem but the smallest cog rubbed on the derailleur hanger screw. I put a small spacer on the axle and it workes great.

The cheap upgrade route to 1x11 is to go with something like:
Sunrace 11-46 cassette
Shimano SLX shifter/derailleur
KMC 11 spd chain
Chinese narrow-wide chairing to suit your preferred gearing

Keep in mind that on 11x or 12x conversions you might need to mess around with bottom bracket or chainring spacers to get a good chainline that doesn't jump when backpedaling.

However, if you care more about having a particular range rather than ideal gear ratios you might be able to get by with a really cheap 1x9 option: keep your rear mech and switch to an 11-46 9spd cassette (ZTTO) and hopE that the extension link allows the derailleur to function well. The latter option can be done for about $25 compared to the range of $130-150 for a 1x11 and a good bit more for a 1x12.

Desertride you have pretty much managed to guess my shopping list for the 1X11 with the exception I went for a raceface narrow wide chain ring rather than a generic chinese one. The courier has unfortunatley made a real mess of my delivery though so until they get their act together i am now stuck with the bike in pieces. Might have a look at converting it to tubeless whilst i am at it.
