2008 Jamis XAM BOTH CHAINSTAYS BROKE!!

Hey all,

Just thought you guys might like to hear another story of a broken Jamis. Today I was riding my 08 XAM 1 and when landing (perfectly I might add) off a small 1 foot drop on a dirt trail BOTH of my chainstays snapped and sent me flying OTB. Fortunately I was wearing protective gear and wasn't seriously hurt but this is borderline ridiculous. I DO NOT freeride or do huge drops, most of the time I am riding trails at Tussey Mountain here in PA. My bike is house kept and and I inspect it every ride. There was absolutely NO warning that this was about to happen they just snapped on a small drop. Totally unsafe and absolutely lucky that I wasn't seriously hurt. I have some pics posted so you can see, snapped both right next to the welds. Unreal. Contacting Jamis about replacement.

thats what happens when sloppy riders case landings. haha

hope it gets replaced!
holy crap man. that sucks. i think its about time jamis got some emails.
Being that I am still fuming about my frame breaking, your humor is lost on me. BTW, please make a youtube video on how to case 1 foot drops, I smell instant front page
**UPDATE**

So, after contacting Jamis and asking to be put in touch with their warranty department, they sent a canned response telling me to take the bike to my local Jamis dealer. I did, and after checking back a week later they apparently sent a 2008 triangle (not upgraded or fixed in any way) to my dealer without contacting me at all. I have no confidence in the 2008 triangles after hearing all of the problems they have had, and after demolishing one myself. This is also disturbing because even though my LBS inspected the bike and noted that my crank and rear derailleur were damaged by the frame breaking and the ensuing wreck (and put these details in the warranty claim), they didn't send replacements or offer any sort of compensation. And to top it all off, they aren't covering installation of the new triangle (which is supposed to be between 80-120 bucks). So in recap, my 5 month old bike snaps in half during normal riding sending me OTB and breaking my crank/rear derailleur, and I end up with a non upgraded replacement, a broken crank and rear derailleur, and a bill for 80-120 bucks. I am contacting Jamis again and this had better get sorted out. My rear is starting to hurt.

dude you are ridiculous. i broke a Giant anthem x3 09' in 30 days and took it to the lbs, and they declined a warrenty. just be happy you got a new frame and move on. s*** breaks.

Sounds like you aren't much of a fighter. I'd be on the same page as the OP if I had a bike break on me within the first 6 months, let alone the first month or even the first week! I'd be livid and doing everything I could to get reimbursed for everything. I mean, it's a mountain bike. It should be able to handle a 1ft "drop". Good luck OP!

they could probably tell that you cased a 1' landing. giant has a sloppy riding clause in the warranty fine print.

r_moo...weaksauce for sure. hope people come into this forum before they buy a jamis bike. id say sell the frame and buy something from a manufacturer that stands behind their product.

You wouldn't happen to work in the Jamis warranty department would you? YOU are ridiculous!!!
***UPDATE 2***

Well, it took some doing (multiple emails, phone calls, etc.) but I was able to reach a supervisor and then things started rolling. I spoke to Nick Zema from Customer Support/Warranty and he was MORE than helpful in resolving the issue. They actually sent a brand new 2010 XAM frame as well as a new derailleur and outer chainring to replace the ones damaged in the crash. I have to give it to Jamis, in the end they came through and I couldn't be happier. Props to Nick Zema, and if you stay persistent Jamis will back up their product (did for me at least).
good too see you got a replacement.

and thats why i wouldnt buy a giant again.
nice. good job jamis. thats whats going to keep customers around.
Spoke to the Jamis rep after I finished the Gearjammer race in Squamish. He assured me that a replacement part is on it's way. Let's hope he is true to his word.
It sounds like you got a lot of response quickly from jamis.

To put it in perspective.
I have a 09 trek ex8 with broken frame in the shop and trek is not honoring the replacement, been over a month. They are supposed to be the best.

Everyone has a warrenty story from all manufactures.

Let me get this staight. You called Jamis and they sent out the part before you went to the authorized dealer to have it dealt with. The shop (not jamis) charged you for the work. The shop should fix it N/C and then hit jamis up for the repair charges after the customer is satisfied. On top of that after some more discussion they gave you a whole new frame.

Not sure why you are upset.

The trek with the lifetime warrenty sitting in my shop with no resolve or response for a month is a reason to be upset.

Not sure who this post is supposed to be directed at. Certainly not me, since I still don't have a replacement and it's been over three months.
i know how u feel.

i have had 3 xam 1 2008 snap on the chainstays. i got a xam 2 2010 and snapped it coming down a driveway and hoping not even a foot and SNAP my frame was broken again. they said they have never seen a 2010 xam 2 frame break in canada. i think thats a lie. and be lucky it lasted five months under you every xam 1 frame snapped in within a month and the 2010 i think snapped in 2 or 3 months.
I have a 2009 XAM 1 frame and have gone lift access DH riding with it multiple times with no issues.
I would like to know how you broke your crankset by tanking on a 1 foot drop. I would also like to know how you went over the bars. If your front end digs in, then you go OTB. If your rear end digs in...you skid along the trail.

Either way, I am happy that you're getting it fixed up. Next time, have the LBS get the parts and you put them in yourself. No 80-120 bucks labor to deal with.
considering buying a jamis.

I have read the above.

I would like to hear more about people thoughts/experience with them.

thanks,
