This is my first build from the ground up and I have some questions on cable routing. I have 2 of the XTR shifter cable kits. This means I have 2 short housings, 1 medium housing, and 2 long housings in each kit. What is the best arrangement for these? I was going to bring each shifter around the opposite side of the stem and cross them back under the taco. It seems like the two short ones are cutting it really close on the running from the shifters to the first cable stop. However, the long ones are way to long and then that leaves me short in the middle run (rear) and final run (front). Obviously, I can cut up both the kits but I just wanted to see what I was missing before I started doing that. Another question is exactly how do I use the funny rubber dohickeys that attach to the housing and look like crud/waterproofing? When housing hits a cable guide, do they go on the other side of the guide? Pics would be nice....Thanks a lot.....

I go around the far side of the head tube in front. In back this necessitates a cable crossing under the taco. No worries. Just do what seems most natural.

The cable end ferrule goes into the cable stop with the long tube sticking out the back. Slide the cable through this, slide the grub (rubber boot) onto the cable, and then shove it onto the plastic tube sticking out from the back of the stop. They work extremely well.

Stick ferrules into all the cable stops and cut the housing to length before ever threading the cable through it all. The housing should not get pulled tight when you spin the bars all the way, but you do not want so much slop that it forms big extra loops anywhere. In general, use just enough housing to get the job done, then add about 1/2" just for safety.
