OK, I couldn't find a service manual for my 03 Z1 so I just took it apart and changed the oil. I used Maxima 7wt oil. I weigh 185lbs and maybe I should have used 10wt but 7wt is what I had available. Anyway, is there anything special you have to do to re-set the preload or rebound when you reassemble the fork, like making sure they are turned all the way clockwise or CCW? I didn't check any of this, so I hope I didn't screw anything up.

not really

Make sure you have all preload off, that would be counterclockwise. This isn't really crucial, just makes it easier. When you have the springs and topcaps off the fork, and drained all the oil (cycle dampers to let oil out of those), compress the fork all the way, push both damper and eta rods all the way in. This is where add oil. Turn the damper adjustment all the way closed and cycle the damper a few times to fill it back up with oil. Turn eta on and cycle that a few times to fill it up with oil. Then push them all the way back down, and with the fork compressed, check the oil height (measure down from the top of the threads). You'll want it somewhere between 55 and 40 mm depending on your weight and what type of riding you do. Just leave the preload off and the eta off, and the damper all the way closed and put it back together!

There are a couple sites with more detailed instructions, but I like the first one better.
