I have a specialized hardrock (oversize steel frame) with rockshox (jett) I bought new in 2001.
The forks have seized rigid. So I wanted to see if I could replace them. I removed the top cap and stem but the forks wouldn't budge. They seem to be held in by some other means.

Any ideas on how to remove them?

Give them a tap on top with a rubber mallet (or a hammer but I'd put a rag or a flat piece of wood on the steerer if you're doing that so as not to cause any damage). There shouldn't be anything else holding them in, unless maybe the compression type ring in the headset is wedged tight around the steerer, that's the only thing likely to be holding them in place still and tapping should solve that....if you tap a bit then push the fork back up the headset (the top part) might have gone up the steerer a bit, you can try pull it off and then pull the fork out. Otherwise keep tapping I guess.
