Hi all,

I was hoping I could have some advise please. I am building my first set of wheels and I am worried I have made a mistake.

The wheels are a XC set with DT Swiss EX391 29er rims with 32 spokes. I have started building these with a 2 cross pattern, but I am concerned I should have built 3 cross? Obviously changing will mean having to replace the spokes which was already a nightmare finding in the right size to start with...

Thanks all.

How much you weigh?

Probably fine for an XC wheelset. For what it’s worth, …all of ENVE wheels are 2x.

But I’m sure more knowledgeable wheel builders will chime in.

Should work okay, especially since you used 32-hole (smart at your weight). Find the correct spoke lengths using one of the free online calculators shouldn't be difficult, I'm sure someone here would be glad to check your work. Personally, I would start over, and not use the D-Lights, spokes thinner than 1.8mm are a pain due to the wind-up. Especially since you're a new builder. I've had great luck with Sapim Race.

What are your thoughts on 28H 29” 2x vs 3x with DT Swiss Competition 2.0/1.8mm spokes?

Rider weight 200~210lbs, XC typically / maybe ~2ft drops

I guess when is the need to jump tho 32 over 28 and similar 2x vs 3x. It’s easy to say always build 32 3x for a stronger wheel. Just looking what to expect with 28h hubs.

As you junior77 said, sorry if I was not clear.

I already have the d-light spokes at the length for 2 cross. I think I will give that a go where supply of spokes is difficult (as is everything at the moment).

I guess if I keep going out of true or break spokes I will have to rebuild.

Thanks the help

The problem with rebuilding, from my limited knowledge, it is recommended to stick with the original build up of 2x and not switch to 3x due to the spokes creating wear marks on the hub. Not sure how detrimental it is to switch on a used hub flange.
