I know what you were hoping for, but in fact just the opposite:D

This was somewhat short notice as Tye has been hitting me up to go camping. Time and time again he impresses me with his over active spirit so I decided to test the waters with a caming/fishing/biking thing. Also, this was a good time for me to let him loose a little without moms watchful eye:nono: Plan was to scout NM376 in the Jemez Mtns for a suitable spot to camp. Prerequisites had to include good fishing for the boy, nice waterin' hole for the pup, and some scenic trail for Dad. I think this counts!

Here is a shot of the old train tunnels the lead into the canyon

First we pitched camp and settled down to some lunch

Eh...well, at least one of us set up while the other was a little preoccupied

However, Tye was very interested in getting the fire ready for this evenings marshmallow feast

By midday on Monday, it was apparent that today we would fish. I had wanted to squeeze in a short ride due mainly to all of the trails, jeep and otherwise, spread out all around our campsite...but there would be time for that later. Today we fished!

Even the dog was getting into it. She was trying to ambush the catch from the grass. I found her even looking for them in the water, ready to pounce at first site.

He looks pretty tired in this picture and deservedly so. It had been a long day:D

Tossing things in the fire will cure just about anything that ails you though.

A view from the captains chair

Did I mention marshmallows?

The next day we agreed would be reserved for biking. We ended up taking off into the meadow from our campsite linking various walking paths and a little road. Pretty cool for it being right off of the campsite.

Further up the meadow there was what seemed to be a lilly patch that I though was cool

...and we meandered our way through some pretty primitive terrain.

The kid has got some moves for being 4 1/2 years old

There were some obstacles. We had to cross the creek a few times during the journey...darn fishermen can't make up there mind which side to fish from. Here Tye is thinking that he will carry his own bike.

...and a couple of steps later he has changed his mind

It turned out to be a relatively short ride as the insects, primarily these little fly like creatures, were having their way with us. So we headed deeper into the canyon to scout some other areas.

There is a war going on between the Pines and the Aspens

and the walls of the cliffs are pot marked with these little covey's

There were some other really cool "freerideable" features that I noticed along the way;)

I encountered some amazing scenery and before I knew it, I was out on Hwy 4...Perfect! I decide that a detour to East Fork was in order. So off we went. It is nice when a plan works out better than expected. When we got there of course Tye wanted to fish, but it was dads day to bike...we did both:thumbsup:

Life is good

I know I am going to catch some flack for the next two, but I am prepared with a strong argument. I have never let him ride without a helmet, but we were already so far from the truck before I/he realized it wasn't on. I was freaking a little a first but he was being careful:rolleyes:

Perfect ending to a perfect trip...Thanks Tye, I will never forget it.

Oh...obligatory Soda Dam shot

Sweet that he's riding East Fork at only 4. Probably better than me.

When you're getting him the xtra small Turner? Looks like he needs it already.

Yea, maybe some would give you flak about helmetless Tye, but did we ever wear helmets when we were kids?? I'd be the proverbial hypocrite to call that out.

Great pics, good to see you out with your boy and his dog!

Jemez/SF Nat'l Forest has stage 1 restrictions. NO FIREWORKS
Actually, based upon the info on teh internets, the Santa Fe has *no* restrictions. But fireworks are always prohibited on national forest lands, even the "safe and sane" type.

Good on you Bryan!

Yeah, kids kick ass.

I'm slowly breeding an XC champion (she doesn't know it, so keep it on the down-low).

I've got two daughters, one of which has huge genetic gifts as an endurance athlete.

I turned her loose this year. Merely junior high track, but she won the district championship in the mile and 800m, on her first try at any organized sport.

Next season we're going to use her mtb as "training" for track.

I wish there were more support for youth cycling here in NM, but I'll do what I can.

I have no doubt that she will exceed all of your expectations. She definitely has more than fighting chance given the bloodline. Thanks!

Thanks.

I noticed that you called recently. I don't know why I missed it.

I'm riding a rigid 29er these days, but am up for riding anywhere.

Evenings besides Tues & Thurs are always open...
