Ok i am looking for a new xc bike that i will mostly use for singletrack. My two options are a 2007 rocky mountain element 10 or a 2005 cake dlx 1. The rocky is at a lbs near where i live and will be sold to me for about 950 bucks. The cake one is owned by a friend of my who would like a new bike also and would be selling it for 1100 dollars. What do you think is my better choice and why?

Element - hands down 100%.
Its a much better upgrade base when (and it will be when) you get infected with upgraditis.
Its a fantastic frame, with a suspension system thats been tweaked to perfection over the years.
Also, you can try to haggle them down or get freebies alongside it - noone likes to do that to a friend
