1up bike rack MOD ?

8553 Views 22 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Flyer
Hi all, I have decided to get me a 1up bike rack for Christmas.

Now I know the general complaint of users of the original rack is the lever for tilting the rack is at the bottom and difficult to get to. I also am aware the Equip D has solved this issue, but I want the Super Duty for the weight capacity and Offroad/RV use.

My question - what have you as an owner of the bike rack done or modified to solve the issue?

Thanks

You beat me to it. That was going to be my comment.

My vote is that it might be a non-issue for you, but if it is, get the "ez pull" later.

Me, I never tilt the rack with bike(s) on it, so the regular handle is fine.

I have the extension handle on both my 2 and 4 tray 1 Ups, I also have the 4 tray installed with the RakAttach swing adapter.

Yes, I see that, but that's another $79... I just ordered the rack, and based on the link posted above about some mods, I think I have some stuff in my garage I can use...
I have the EZ Pull handle but have not installed it yet. It is not bad (for me) to work the rack but the EZ Pull will make it easy.

I have the Super Duty (2 bike) and the EZ Pull Handle. Both works great and its makes it ez to tilt the rack. The Equip D wasn't a solution for me due to the weight limit.

I bought the 3 tray extended handle, but shortened it up longer than the 2 by about an inch. I leave this on at all times, even with 4 trays. Pic is with the 2 tray extender before I bought the longer rods.

The device I made with the nylon straps posted in the other thread would cost under $10 if you don't already have something in your garage that would work. It's not a very pretty solution but it definitely worked okay.

I recently sold my 1up and replaced it with the Equip-D just so everything would look cleaner.

Quick update, I have some bits in my garage that I used. The red bar is just so the ties don't wiggle themselves to the middle. It's still fiddly because the black bar does not get pulled on both ends at the same time. The right side always gets left and I have to push/pull the rack to get it loose and pulled out of the groove.
For now my mod is ok, but if I get fed up, I will get the EZ pull.

Additional question, what is the hole next to the allen key hole that tightens the ball tensioner? Thanks

I agree the latch system is very poor!
I just used my new super duty 2" hitch rack. IT REALLY NEEDS A BETTER WAY TO UNLOCK AND SWIVEL. 1up wants you to spend $90 more, on top of the $665-$715, for their extremely poor implementation of a latch and positioning thereof, that allows swinging rack up and down!
These hacks look interesting. Thank you!

I have not even installed the handle yet (heavy duty rack) but I will soon. I took the rack off all winter since my fatbike could go in the vehicle with both the wheels on. I hope it works well.
Just whipped this up last night. Looks great, simple design, and works awesome! With this setup, when I add another add-on for 4 bikes for my SUV, I can lengthen the cords, undo the velcro to attach the handle to the last add-on, and quickly re-adjust tension in seconds using the Line Locks. The system consists of:
  • 5/8 inch wooden dowel, 6.5" long, 2 holes on each end to tie cord, 1 hole in middle for zip tie
  • 1 zip tie with mount eye
  • 1 Velcro tie (8" x 1/4")
  • 2 pieces of 3mm paracord, each 46" long
  • 2 Line locks (small - https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5028-461/Line-Lock)
  • A little bit of Gorilla Tape so the aluminum isn't so slippery (optional)

Also made my own ez pull system. $70 or $80 for the 1up ez pull or 2 days of design and 3d printing to make my own

Of course I also have my rack mounted on a Kuat Swingaway :ROFLMAO:
