my old bike is a 99 jamis dakar comp. i'd like to pimp it out for ~$500 give or take a couple hundred. what upgrades do you recommend?
i currently ride a 2004 haro werx xls, which i like much better. i just want to have a spare for friends, my brother, etc.

Assuming no upgrades.

I'd churn through $500 easily with three things.

1) New cables/housing, chain & cassette (i.e. a Tune Up) - $100
2) New Fork. $300
3) New Wheels & Tires $150-$200

A bit more than the $500 quote, but those three things will revitalize most bikes and make 'em feel much much better.
