here's a bike i picked up recently. it was in pretty bad shape because the guy i got it from left it out on his carport for at least 10 years. he said in 1986 the frame was sent back to Specialized to fix a busted brake post and when he got it back they repainted from silver to red.

Nice bike! It's the exact same color as my '86 Rockhopper.

. if someone blindfolded me and stuck me on this bike i would swear it was a Schwinn beach cruiser. it's a production clunker. :)
That's the exact same reaction I had when I first rode my '82. It's very laid back and the steering is unresponsive.

Is that an original Stumpjumper saddle? Mine came with an Avocet Touring II.

Here are a couple of pics of my Stumpjumper before I put on a set of original Stumpjumper tires. Jeff @ First Flight told me it was made in July, 1982 based on the serial number. I think the waterbottle is the original that came with the bike.

That water bottle is newer by a good number of years.

Nice clean up on that Sky. I think its really a Rockhopper with upgraded stickers, though. ;)

That looks to be a Stumpjumper Sport, and at least 1985 or earlier because of the biplane fork. Later ones had a unicrown fork. They have some collectability, but the Stumpjumper Sports were a less expensive model and not as valuable today as regular Stumpjumper.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but those appear to be Shimano Deer Head XT thumbshifters, and Shimano Deore XT brake levers and XT cantis. What kind of crank and derailleurs does it have?

Are these stumpjumpers worth any money?

There is one not to far from me for sale:

Where was the serial number located on this bike? I just bought an old Specialized Rockhopper... and I don't know if it even has a serial number, much less where it might be.

Thanks,

The serial number should be on the underside of the bottom bracket. (My '86 Rockhopper has the number located there)

Post some pictures and/or specs and we could help you narrow down the age of the bike.
