So yea just like the title says.I raced bmx for about 5 years, and love to ride. Im just not very comfurtable on a bmx bike anymore, old wrecks haunt me, with aches and pains when i ride my bmx bike. So im looking to step into the mountain bike world. Im looking to spend around 300 bucks for a decent bike. I know buying a bmx bike, you dont buy a complete bike. I have always built them with the parts i ordered and exactly how i wanted. I am looking for somthing with atleast a front shock, and was curiuse what you guys would recommend.Im about 5.7 and 190 lbs roughly. Im going to use it to ride mild to moderate trails, not so much downhill but to go out in the woods and ride. What would you guys reccomend is the best bike for the money on the market right now?

Your asking alot for 300.00 what do you want a hard tail or full suspenssion? Your better off buying a used complete bike for that price range.
Yea i know its alot ot ask for because its hard to get ahold of any decent bike for 300. I am lookin between 300 and 400 dollars roughly, and as for dual suspenion or hard tail, ill go eaither way, it just depends on what i find. I was just curiuse as to what brands where considered good. I know specialized was decent in the BMX world but i didnt know how they where in the mtb world. GT used to be huge in the bmx world but they have died down, im not sure what there quality is with mountain bikes. Gary fisher was not very successful in the bmx world, along with trek, so i wasnt sure about there mountain bikes. Can somone give alittle insight on more of what brand is better than others? I mean most of the time i can tell by the workmanship in the parts but i just wanted to get some other oppinions.

I would suggest a full suspension bike, there a butload of great bikes. In the price range your looking into possibly as Specialized FSR. They have been around awhile & are very popular as you know from BMX. More popularity means easier to find up grades & parts. If you enjoy your riding after a season you'll now what you want next.
In your price range, unless you get luck on a used ride, there is no way you can get a decent FS bike. Look for hardtails. If you want new, Jamis makes a decent bike, Specialized Hardrock will be in your range. you will find some trek bikes in your range, basically every major brand has a hard tail begining in your range. Go ride some at a bike shop, tell them what you want, and see what they suggest. Good luck

Matt
yea I have a few shops lined up to go check out, i never really went to any bike shops in the past, i always just went to www.danscomp.com, but since i dont know a whole lot about mountain bikes i figured id do some reasearch before i just jumped into something. I plan on upgrading parts in the fueture, like fork, brakes, cranks, ect.. so i dont need to buy a top of the line bike right off the bat, just a good building platform.
Check MTBR Reviews for ideas, then you can check out stuff like eBay for aproximate pricing.

I found a pretty nice specialized hardrock on ebay, I contacted the guy with an e mail so i will keep you all posted. Thank you, you guys have all been very helpful :)
I would be woried. Pictures are blured & very poor quality so you cant see anything, feedback score zero, not shure on shipping cost. The person is not specific as to what the up grades are, words like Bomber front shock "fork".
Keep looking!
Yea, i contacted this guy and have talked to him alittle bit, he doesnt seem to know a whole lot
I know im probably never going to hear the end of it for asking this, but i was at walmart yesterday looking around doing some xmas shopping and i came across the schwinn s-30. Its dual suspension, aluminum frame. all sealed bearings, those stupid gripshifters( id ont like them much) suntour fork, and some other stuff. Its priced at 230. The frame looks decent, and was curiuse if this would possibly be a good building platform.

Here's a couple suggestions what to look for.

www.adrenalinebikes.com then check out KHS bikes.
I picked up a nice 2002 Specialized Roockhopper on Ebay a couple weeks ago for $300, 9 spd lx/deore, manitou fork and good condition. I am just using it for the start of a build that I have been wanting to do for a while. If you look long enough you can find something.
That said, I searched for a long time to find what I want used, it will be harder for someone who really doesn't know what they are looking for. The Specialized Hardrock is a great entry level platform, my brother has been riding one for three years now, I would look at going the new route. A knowledgable LBS will help you a lot in picking the right bike.
I have been looking at the rockhopper and the FSR quite a bit, I am going to a bike shop on wednesday (whom i used to occasionally deal with getting bmx parts if needed asap) and talk to them, they have always been really helpful in the past. I will let you guys know! thanks again!
Do yourself a favor and get a hardtail, for no other reason that to ensure you correctly develop your skills for mountain biking. Eventually, you will move to full suspension and with your BMX pedigree, quite quickly. But its importnat to get your skills in order first and a hardtail will do that for you properly.

Going direct to a FS bike when learning to ride MTB is like learning how to shoot skeet with a machine gun.
Ive ridden a few FS bikes, and didnt really care for them too much to begin with. Im sure one of these days I will get one, but not right now, its not in the budget so im just looking for a good hardtail.
So, i bought the s30, just to screw around on and put my clipless pedles on and have been riding it. Its really not that bad of a bike , wheels could use alil attention, along with the fork but so far everything else seems to be good.
