I have a Marin Hawk Hill 1 that has a rear wheel 142x12 through axle. I’m thinking of moving it to a 12 speed for the 11x50 cassette but there does not seem to be many options for replacement wheels that accommodate both a 12 speed cassette and a 142x12 through axle. Is this even possible?

a 12spd 11-50 cassette will fit on a standard HG freehub body and will fit any wheel that has one.

And 12spd 10-50 and 10-52 cassettes will fit on a standard xD freehub body on any wheel that has one.

The only ones that are a bit weird are the Shimano 10-51 cassettes on a micro spline freehub body. And that has nothing to do with hub spacing, really. It just comes down to the fact that not many hub manufacturers offer micro spline freehub bodies for older hubs. Some do, but some do not.

For "standard" 12 speed cassettes you need either a Shimano Microspline or a SRAM XD driveshell. You can put either of those on virtually any hub so long as the manufacturer of said hub has a driveshell available for it. That being said, yes the 142x12 is quickly being replaced by the 148 boost standard. Many manufacturers are still offering a 142 hub, though you might have to order a custom wheelset.
