1400g wheelset with 28H and 28-30mm ID ... possible? 29er

Do any companies offer this combo or am I stuck going with a custom build?

I own two carbon wheelsets - 1500g, 28H, 29mm/36mm and 1300g, 24H, 29/34mm - ideally I want a hybrid that weighs less than 1500g but has more lateral stiffness than my 24 spoke set, built around proven components. Any suggestions?

Check out Light Bicycle. NOBL almost meets all your criteria as well, TR32s with DT Swiss 240 hub and Sapim D-Light spokes with a claimed weight of 1400 grams. Inner diameter is 27(F)/26(R) mm, though, so they are a bit off your wishlist. NOBL does have a lifetime warranty on their premium series, whereas I believe Light Bicycle has a limited warranty.

If you're looking for some "dream wheels", have them built by Berd with Berd spokes. That knocks 100-200 grams of rotating weight off the wheels and they ride beautifully. They built a set for me and they're great. They sell complete sets too. I think there's a set that meets your requirements on their site. Search for Berd spokes. Edit : just checked and their 27mm id 29ers are 1340g and 30mm id 29ers are 1480. Those are with Hydra hubs. If you send them DT 240 hubs you'd be under 1400g for 30mm id all-mountain wheels!

BTLOS i30as extralight with DT Swiss 180 hubs and Sapim CX-ray spokes comes in about 1300 grams. XC use.

Roval Control SL come in at 1240g (but 24H), and the Roval Control 6B are at 1450 (28H) - Both advertised weights.

The Roval Control 6B, while not under 1400g seems to be the closest to your list of requirements.

Reserve 28xc with dt swiss 180s = 1,370g and 2,200. With 240s, they weigh in at 1470 for 1,900.
Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. Here is another good 28H option I found - SYNCROS SILVERTON 1.0S, 30MM internal @ 1340g claimed.

I have a set of BTLOS i29 rims with CXRay spikes and 180 hubs that are 1350 grams. The rims are the premium all mountain build. With 240 hubs they would be about 1400 grams and less $.

My wheels ended up coming in at 1480 grams. I like light parts however they have to work very well for me first and foremost, and these do. The rear rim is a downhill layup and this has been a good thing on a few occasions. The front rim is 33mm wide which works well for a front and adds considerable weight. The spokes are dead reliable, and I really like the P321 hubs for this application.

I've been on these wheels for 2.5 years now and they show no signs of failure. I plan to keep them a good bit longer.

Wheels can certainly be made lighter, my Spur 29" wheels weigh 1095 grams, however I wouldn't take those rims to the bike park.

GL.

I have a set of the Berd TR27 wheels built up with 240's. I forget the exact figure, probably posted a photo on the scale in the Berd thread at some point. But somewhere in the 1200's and been totally bombproof. the 30mm ones would end up about a hundred grams more. I run 2.4's so not really worried about it, but would absolutely recommend them either way.
A recent build fits the bill, or at least very close to it.

-Onyx Vesper hubs, Boost, 28H.
-Berd Spokes.
-Newmen Advanced SL X.A30 29" rims, 30mm inner width.
-621g for the front, 859g for the rear.

Not gonna lie, building a wheel where the hub is heavier than the rim is strange to me.

Hub weight has very little effect on how a wheelset rides as all the weight is very close to the rotational axis => little effect on inertia.

I just built up a set which came in at 1430g
  • Nextie NXT29XMA35 rims, 30mm IW
  • CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples
  • Erase boost hub rear / i9 1-1 boost hub front, 6-bolt

My second set is 1350g
  • Nextie NXT29XMA33 rims, 27mm IW
  • CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples
  • DT240 Boost hubs, CL

You can save a bit with aluminum nipples but IMO it’s not worth the hassle of replacing seized nipples if you break a spoke.

Some seriously lightweight sets there!

Considering the ratio of a hub to rim weight has never crossed my mind before. As said previously, the rim weight has a bigger effect if weight is a consideration. Personally, I prefer performance and durability over weight every time when choosing components.

My light xc set is: Syntace Straight MX hubs 28h sp, DT Aerolite, Carbonfan low profile 25mm rear, 30mm front: 635g/725g
Trail set is: Tune Climbhill 32h J bend, DT Aerolite, Nextie 30mm rims. 746g/828g

Unfortunately I built them before Berd was a thing so they aren't the lightest.

I would go with the control carbon 29 mm @ 1450 g, you can get a 15% discount on them at specialized.com

I ended up with the Control SL only because the 29 mm control weren't out yet
I just happened to look at the NOBL site today and saw that they now have Berd spokes as an option. TR32s with 28 holes, DT180 hubs, Berd spokes at 1215 grams.
