12th Annual Dogmeat No Dab Challenge (Los Gatos, CA) BEGINS!

10053 Views 100 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  dope pedaler
It's NO-DAB season! Rejoice! Are you in for this year's challenge? Recent rains says this could be a good one.

Here's how it works:
Between now and March 31, 2022, try to ride up the infamous Dogmeat hill on a bike but, once you start, you may not at any point let your foot or hand touch the ground or bush or tree or friend or whatever. This is a no-dab challenge! The challenge begins at the start of Dogmeat (In Los Gatos, CA - Technically the second half of Priest Rock in Sierra Azul at the four way intersection) from start of intersection of Limekiln and Priest Rock to top of mountain at the intersection. Feel free to ride as slow as you want (or fast) but it's wheels only to the top. Those that succeed earn their name on the VERY prestigious Wall of Fame and a nice gift card from Summit Bikes in Los Gatos. (Honor system).

Video explaining the challenge brought to you by Mr. Handsome and local legend, Ancient Rascal:

PRIZES:

Summit Bike Store Los Gatos is stepping up once again and graciously giving one lucky participant a $50 gift card. All who participate will be eligible. Thanks so much again SUMMIT!! You guys continue to impress...I can attest, great service and lots of gear to choose from!!

HOW TO WIN: All participants will receive a raffle ticket for just trying (make it or not). If you succeed (No Dabbing the beast), you get three tickets. Winners will be randomly selected.

Here's the beast: Strava Segment

The actual challenge starts at the intersection of Limekiln Trail and Priest Rock Trail and is the Priest Rock ascent to Kennedy Trail at this intersection. Basically, the one going up. (Download map here: http://www.openspace.org/sites/default/files/map_SA.pdf)

For getting there, you have a few options. I'll go easy to hardest:

1) Park next to the reservoir on Alma Bridge Road
Google Maps
You can park next to trail head at either Limekiln Trail or Priest Rock Trail. Limekiln is more of a chunky ascent, almost ST in nature - more on the technical side but not bad. Priest Rock Trail is just a steep FR that gets you there faster but more sustained steep. (Note: if you can't make it up lower Priest or Limekiln, you're in for a rude awakening).

2) Park on Jones Rd, Los Gatos and warm up through St. Josephs Hill. Just take this Jones Trail straight to Alma Bridge.
Google Maps
This will give you a little more saddle time if you are looking for a longer ride. On the way back, you can double back and climb to the top of St Joes for some nice views or descend Kennedy for a bigger loop OR go right at the top of Dogmeat and take on the roller coasters to Limekiln for an even bigger day.

What's it like:
It's like a roller coaster but up. You will find there are really 4 tricky walls with some grinding mixed in but relief spots for each wall. The first wall is near the start...it's short but sets the stage...many miss this first one but easy to return to start and try again. The second wall comes after a brief downhill so you have momentum but you have to strategically plan your gearing here as you don't want to get stuck in a bad gear when it pitches up. This wall is pretty manageable if you can handle the gear shift well. The third wall is a real bastard. It's steady, longish, and steep. As long as you keep a decent cadence and stay on the smoothish middle line and have the lungs, it is doable. Get off line and you might find yourself in some gravel and ruts and very, very hard to recover. This wall gets most people. The last wall is not as pitchy but you get a false sense of being done and if you deviate even a little from the "line", it will bite you. All in all, it is a rather feasible task as long as you have some stamina, rest in all the right places, and manage to stay on the main line up. A light bike really helps too with low tire pressure.

Additional challenges:
-No dab from the road below
-Don't stop at top of Dogmeat but go right and try to keep it going all the way to next intersection (woof, good luck)
-20/40 Challenge on the other side of hill
-How many no dabs can you muster during the challenge
-Fastest time
-Slowest time

Last ask, please post up your adventure fail or success in detail. We love to hear how it went, what bike you rode, your strategy, near misses, PICS!

Gonna have to put the 28t on my bike and try it this season sometime sooner than a week after the challenge ends, unlike last year. 😄

Are you dropping down from a 32t chainring? If so that will really help out. I went to a 28t from a 32t on my 1x11 and that change got me up Dogmeat the last two years. I had planned riding with Ian today up Dogmeat but he is under the weather. I even set up the Salsa for Dogmeat yesterday with a huge 25t cog just to play around out there. It's set up 27x25 ... easy peasy and up the steeps you go! Bicycle Wheel Bicycles--Equipment and supplies Tire Crankset

Yeah, 32 to 28. Last year I tried it on my old Trek 930, because it was light and had a very low gear with the 3x, but it decided it hated shifting, which made it a lot harder. This year I'll be doing it on my DragonSlayer, which is heavier, but with the 28 the gearing will be similar, it's derailleur actually shifts, it has tons of grip, and, most importantly, I sold the Trek.
As an LG man I will have to try this. Is it better or worse than the power poles climb up to el sombroso?

Define 'better or worse'. If you are talking about up upper Limekiln (those power poles), it's quite a bit harder from a steepness/pitch perspective but it's shorter. No dabbing Limekiln isn't really an issue where no dabbing upper Priest Rock (Dogmeat) is tough. If you mean El Sombroso from the top of Kennedy, that has some burly pitches but they are short compared to Dogmeat. Sombroso from the Umunhum side, I don't really remember but I am positive it's not in the same league as Dogmeat.

Quick note: It can be especially nasty right after a big, sustained rain. Clay mud and slick spots can render it impossible but it does dry fairly quick. In the past it has also been very challenging after a long stint of no rain where things get very loose but the last few years have had good lines of solid trail leading you up the hill.

To put some numbers on this, I've gone up upper Limekiln (power poles) many times and I can only remember dabbing once when I got distracted and spun out on some gravel. On the other hand I've attempted Dogmeat about ten times and was successful twice. Upper limekiln has some sustained parts that are around 20% grade but almost nothing more severe. The hardest parts of Dogmeat are close to 30% grade. The best riders can clean it reliably but I have to get a bit lucky.

Welp team, I still got it! Success for a no-dab. Strangely this was the easiest I have ever had trying it over the past decade and some. The highest my heart rate got to was 169 and never felt the need to rest. I had a few things going for me. One the traction is all time...never been any better than right now. Two, I have a really sweet climbing bike now. Specialized Stumpjumper Comp at a cool 25lbs. It's a cheater of a bike. Three, I've been working out like mad this year. Started lifting weights, running twice a week, and non-ebiking a few days a week too. Diet is fantastic too....no longer eat any junk. Going into old age fighting like mad.

I was worried at the start as a bug flew straight into my lungs within the very first 100 yards of leaving my house. Spent 20 minutes trying to cough it up while I climbed up St. Joes and Lower Limekiln to warm up. Lower Lime was actually kinda hard; on the chunky side. Made it to the start with no real issues. Dropped my water bottle off and set my sound track. This year I chose Witchcraft - Legend Album. I've been playing the crap out of it lately.

Starting up, it looked a little soft but it was only soft in a very slight spot near top of first big wall but that was it. Legs a little tired from doing barbell squats last night but not too bad. Steady climb and basically charged the steep pitches. Preferred the left side as much as possible but even getting off track was no issue as it's just not loose or rutty this year. I think if it dries out much, the last stretch to top will be the roughest area as it's pebbly. I had that all too familiar, "Chain don't fail me now" moment 100 feet from the top but it held and I wagged this tail one more year.

So, it's still hard, no doubt but if you have pretty good fitness, a decently light bike, and gumption, it's ripe for the taking.

Nice work and impressive it felt easier for you. I think the working out has made a difference for sure. I will be giving this a go soon like always.

Is the uninterrupted series of successful in a row attempts still intact? Number 6 in a row next attempt? Squashyo has a few in a row going on also me thinks? Sorry to bring it up but you know how I am!
Successful first go this season today. Good conditions, but not easy. Now I have to start the attempts on 20/40 on the other side of the hill...

I am going to try an surpass my last season and see if I can get more. I am going tomorrow morning and may try 2 in a row. Easy to type it and say I will do it, another thing to give it a go for real.
Nice work Kovarpa! Good luck on the other beast. Go gettem PM.

Please mark me down for 2 successful runs today. Had another in the bank but time was not on my side and I had to get home. Never had one issue. I think no-dabbing Overgrown was a challenge because the rains took the soil away and the rocks are like baby heads. It is somewhat tricky but got them all done. Thinking about coming here on a weekend day, setting up a little spot and trying for more attempts. I will keep ya posted. Dog meat No-Dab double shot! - Paul Marshall's 16.3 mi mountain bike ride

Sorry but I am a gluten for punishment and did it 3 more times back to back today. The third time was a bit dicey and I actually tacked sideways at one point. I saw at least 2 others on their way up, hope they made it.
