Hello!

First time poster! total noob here! please be gentle

wrecked my rear wheel a couple of days ago so i thought about getting a new wheelset and now i have run into an issue!

So i currently have a Saracen Mantra Trial 2020 with a SHIMANO ALIVIO – Rear FREEHUB – Its sitting at 10-135 QR and the new wheels im looking at are hunt trail wide mtb 12-142

https://www.huntbikewheels.com/coll...trailwide-mtb-wheelset?variant=12211059687501

Any thoughts on being able to get this to work? Should i just give up and look at something else?

All advice and help is greatly appreciate

Thanks in advance.

according to Hunt, they offer adapters. Browsing their "spares and adapters" section, it looks like this is done for their hubs with an axle swap.

HUNT Rear Axle Adapter Set for All Disc Wheelsets – Hunt Bike Wheels US
Thanks for the reply Harold!

i thought due to having a 135 rear hub fitting a 142 rear hub wouldn’t be possible due to the sizing of the rear drop put being 135c

I really appreciate you helping me out, I’m just getting a little confused 😭

135 and 142 hub shells are exactly the same size/dimensions. The difference between the two is the axles. You could buy the 142mm wheel and then buy the axle kit to convert the 142 wheel to a 135 👍 (if they sell a 142 thru axle to 135 QR conversion kit)

I appreciate the reply 😁

so my mind is completely blown 😂

I thought because my rear drop out is 135 x 10 I thought I could only fit a 135 due to the extra 7mm

I seen this on another MTB

Nope.

As the number suggests, 142mm is 7mm wider than the dropouts on your frame. Also the Surge is 135x10mm, so you have to have either normal quick release or 10mm bolt up, 142x12mm simply won't fit.
If it's a wheel you've already got, check with the manufacturer to see if they sell adapters or a different width axle. Otherwise buy a 135mm quick release rear hub.

I also seen people speak about cold pressing the frame to fit the 142 hub 🤪

Why can’t they just make a standard 😭

i genuinely think I’ll never understand this hahaha

135 and 142 are effectively the same width hub. The only difference is that a 135mm hub is a quick release or bolt on, and the 142 is thru axle. The extra 3.5mm per side is just the shape of the ends of the axle to fit in the different dropouts. If the hub you have offers an appropriate conversion, then the wheels can fit either with that appropriate conversion (and these wheels appear to have said conversion axle available).

141qr and 148ta are also the exact same hub shell (but wider than 135/142). Only difference is the axle (quick release vs thru axle).

135 also comes in a thru-axle, which is what I'm running on my Chris King rear hub. DT swiss makes a good QR thru axle to work with it.

That’s for all the help again Harold, I know you must be banging your head off a wall 😂

if I get the QR kit I won’t need to buy a new drop out would I?

I spoke to Saracen and they said this

you can change the dropouts on your Mantra to the below ones which will convert the hub standard to a 142 x 12mm.

Please note you will need to use a Shimano axle as the description highlights.

Again thank you so much

You can either convert the wheel hub to quick-release, buy a wheel that already has quick release, or it appears in your case, get different drop-outs for the frame to accommodate the thru-axle.

Unless you have compelling need for a rear thru-axle (the case for having one in the front is stronger), just get a quick-release wheel and be done with it.

FWIW,I did notice a slight improvement when going from 135QR to a 135 TA. Very subtle but it was noticable. Running a 3x9 with the 135qr I would notice a very slight chain rub on the front derailleur when in the largest chainring and the smallest sprocket. This was only when putting down the power. When I switched to 135 TA the chain rub went away. That tells me the rear swingarm was slightly flexing under power with the QR.

Thanks for some more input 😁 would you think going down the drop out changer would be better or just take the QR and be done with it?
