I just built up a 1x 8 set up on a bike I'll be using for mainly xc, urban, and jumping. First ride out it worked great, except for dumping the chain off the front ring after jumping. Im running it on the middle ring on an old LX crankset.

Im wondering if a jump stop type of chain guide deal in place of the now missing front derailleur is what I need to fix this, or if I need something more than that. Any suggestions?

No real experience personally but my son had converted his full suspension to a 1x9 with the Kore chain tensioner and he kept dropping the chain. He figured the full susupension was the culprit. If you look in the MTBR files for the SS set up it appears the Surley Singulator or similar chain tensioner might work better than the Kore.

Singulators are for singlespeed conversions. It replaces the rear derailleur. Not what you want for a 1x8 or 9.

as shiggy already answered...

N-gear Jumpstop
Bashring/Chainguard (Spot Brand for me)

this setup works fine as long as it is setup right (have to position the Jumpstop correctly)

you can also go to a medium cage RD and much shorter chain (depending on rear travel)

a picture of my setup...
