I had a short cage X9 and it was pretty awesome. I now have an X0 long cage, and it shifts better, but the chain line is thrown off quite a bit. So in short, buy a short cage if you can, middle if you can't get a short cage, and long cage if you get a really nice deal on it and it's a good derailleur
I use a SRAM twist shift, a XO medium RD, 32 tooth front ring, 11-34 rear cog & N-Gear Jump stop. No chain suck or chain dropping off issues. Shifts great.
Med will reduce chain slap I would think. Biggest cog in the rear cassette governs it more then the front ring. Not sure how a short would work on a 34t.
I run a short cage XO with a 11-34 rear and it works great. With a X9 trigger shifter it is super snappy, feels much quicker than the long cage X9 I had before switching to a 1x9.
