I have a spare Cannondale furio frame which is in need of a fork.

Options:
1. Buy a new cannondale fork (either a super fatty ultra, or a lefty) - way too much $$$
2. Buy a used cannondale fork - can't find one, or they want too much $$$ (as above)
3. Upgrade the fork on my ellsworth, and stick the old fork (TALAS) onto the furio frame

I'm now looking at 3 - get that 1.125" fork into my furio frame.

Given that I'm going for a longer A-C fork (well, at any travel > than the 85mm minimum on the TALAS), I'm looking for the headset that has the lowest "stack height" between the fork crown and the frame.

I saw what looked like the headset I was after, when I saw a new prophet 4x with TALAS36 on it. The gap between the frame and fork crown was only a couple of mm. I couldn't see what the headset was though, and the cannondale website states that it is a "Orbit Z 1.5". I could only find an "Orbit ZR" on other sites. Is this the same thing?

If I buy that headset, should it go straight into my Furio Frame, just like other bikes? (ie. no other parts needed because it is a cannondale). Is the headtube on my frame the same as any other "1.5 standard" frames? Is the fact that it is an "internal" headset make an difference when it comes it fitting problems?

The only other low stack height headset I found was a Syncros FBI headset. Any opinions on these?

Thanks

Ordered a FSA Pig 1.5 reducer headset for my Chase 1 from go-ride today. Cheap,$31.

Cane Creek makes a 1.5 reducer but make sure you order it in the "short" insertion depth. It runs about $90 or so.
Yeah, I just came across the Cane Creek Double XC headset just now. I've read a little conflicting material about it though. I'm almost certain that the short version will definitely work (in both my old CAD4 frame & my furio frame), but will the "regular" version (20mm insertion) work in my furio frame as well? I've read that the earlier cannondale frames were not compatible with the onepointfive std (which requires the 20mm insertion), but gemini's were compatible, and newer cannondale were going to be also. So, are they? The fact that people are still steering cannondale owners towards the short version of the headset suggests not. eg. speedgoat says to go with the short version, and you have also.

Having a look at the headset you got (Big Fat Pig 1.5R), it has a 21mm insertion, which implies that your hardtail is totally compatible with the onepointfive standard. Do you know if my 2005 model furio frame has the same headtube? Will my headtube fit your headset?

The reason I ask all this (ie. will 20mm insertion work on the furio frame) is because I am looking for a low stack height, and the "Double XC flush" (which is like the above mentioned headsets) has that low stack height, but from looking at the pictures of it, it looks to have the 20mm deep insertion. i'd like to hear if anyone has fit a 20mm deep headset into a newer 'dale furio hardtail frame. I interested to see if cannondale only updated the more hardcore frames' headtubes (eg. gemini, chase, prophet) to be totally compatible with the onepointfive standard.

My frame is compatible w/1.5 as it currently is running a FSA Xtreme Orbit 1.5 headset & Sherman Breakout. No spacing in between the ht & headset.

I am assuming you had a headshok on your frame? In looking around for a headset, I came across options such as "short" or "for Cannondale headshok frames."

The Cane Creek double xc "short" is designed for the C-Dale headshok frames. Check out greenfishsports.com or universalcycles.com as they have the "short" version.

I would say go with the Double XC short 1.5 reducer and save some headaches.

Also checkout onepointfivestandard.com for info or links to companies that make 1.5 components.

The Double XC short is for the older C-dale frames that had headshocks. We are talking a headtube change in 2002 or so. (Mendon or DaGerous, can you confirm the frame change year?) Your 2005 frame will be fine with a headset that has the 20mm press depth. Of course, the short will also work, but I say the deeper the better. (go figure)
