1.5 HS: Orbit X Pro vs. Big Fat Pig

924 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  mx_599
just wanted your opinions. have any of you used either of these on your 1.5 steerers? i just opened up my Orbit to find a defective lower cartridge bearing. it is "notchy". i am not installing it like this. i sure hope Transition or FSA is going to give me a replacement.

honestly, i thought the cartridge bearings looked a little weak...not sure if its because it is in a larger opening that i am not as used to seeing or not. just wasn't very impressed with the size.

which leads me to wonder if i shouldn't just get the Big Fat Pig which is cheaper, lighter? according to FSA, and uses 7/32" bottom bearings. (that is considered large for mtb bearings, isn't it?) plus i could run loose bearings and add a few if they are in those retainer rings. (not sure how they come)

thoughts??

I had the Big Fat Pig and now have the Orbit Extreme Pro. I switched because I was having a heck of a time getting the Fat Pig tight without it getting "notchy". When I'd back off on the top cap, it'd be super loose. I tried to mess with it a bunch and couldn't get it dialed.

The Orbit extreme is working better, but I'm still not overjoyed with it. I've got to pull my fork off to change the oil this week, so I'm going to give it the once over.

hmmm...so you think i should stick with the Orbit. there are not much choices for 1.5. did then Pig work good originally...or never from the start?

ever think about the Cane Creek 1.5?

what are you not thrilled about with the Orbit now? can you post any follow-up info after you take it apart as well?

thanks
CHYEAH! no googling either!

There's Woodman:
Saturn
forgot about them. they do have the thrust bearing too. i couldn't even find anyone who sells them. i found a 1.5 to 1 1/8 conversion...but i need just the 1.5

....and WOOdman is on my $hit list at the moment

so is it just FSA, Cane Creek, and WOOdman....am i missing others?

i am assuming Kevin at Transition will make good on the FSA and just replace it. i guess i just wanted to see other options before it is a done deal.
I have the O X Pro headset on my 7.7... I have not had a better headset for the money. Servicing the bearings is a breeze. I don't have any creaking. Stick with the OXPro.

Wyrm
I'm typing this with hands that stink of degreaser. Why? Because I just got into a fist fight with my Big Fat Pig 1.5R on my 7Point3....

Whoever designed it needs to be pimp slapped. Last weekend's downpour in the northeast saw me taking TWO whole downhill runs at a race. After driving home, putting the bike in teh basement and then checking on it the next day the headset was seized. All the grease washed out, replaced with grit. Sure it started to rotate again but I just disassembled, cleaned, polished with a 3M pad, regreased, and reassembled the thing and it's now a lovely notchy grindy feeling piece of chit (mang!).

My bearings look like lumpy golfballs. My races were unevenly worn and pitted. I cursed the heavens and swore I'd never buy another FSA headset........

....but I probably will. Damn reducer headsets.

Sorry about Woodman but they do make a 1.5 specific Saturn 1.5 and you can buy directly from them. (if they have em in stock)

Choices are a good thing and as the hot butter guy stated, I too have had issues with my FSA pig.

last time i tried to call jim the number was disconnected. then jim told me through his earthlink email that the USA office was permanently closed.

what gives??? this is part of the reason WOOdman is on my $hit list. when philippe from some other country finally decided to respond to an email, he alluded to the fact of a USA office again....i don't know what the hell they're up to. but not happy...
