I am wanting to order the 09 Saint Crank for my Demo 8 to shave some weight. But I have heard that the new saint will not work with my current Gamut Chainguide, so if I order the crank, what guide should it get? I see alot of people running the guides with the Taco Guards, but i hear they can damage your ISCG tabs if you hit hard enough, so I wanted to stay with a standard setup unless people really recommend running the Taco.

You can order the crankset with the bashguard and chainring. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that normal bashguards don't work with 09 Saints, other than Saint bashguards. Then you can use your Gamut.

Chainguards with Tacos should work no problem (at least e13 LG1's).

I am waiting for the 165mm version of the 09 Saints. Seems like they are backordered, and won't be available until March.

I have heard that Taco guards are stronger, but I have read otherwise too. Maybe others can chime in.

I had heard rumblings of this and I am not so sure there are problems. I have used my 09 Saints First as an 815-2 with a E Thirteen DRS and then as a Single ring with the Saint Bash and a Black Spire Single ring pulley system. I am not sure on the model since its just a loaner from the shop. I luckily did not need to grind down the granny ring mounts for the Blackspire. I ordered the MRP Mini G and hopefully I don't have a problem with it fitting.

If you are worried about your ISCG tabs you can use the BB Cup ISCG adapter with the LG1. This will take whatever impact you have on your chain guide and put it on the BB Cups rather than the tabs themselves.

Some manufacturers make their ISCG tabs pretty well built, while others don't. I've smacked my taco real hard on my Turner DHR, no problem what-so-ever. Santa Cruz doesn't want you to use them though. Not sure about Specialized.

Do saints have the right chainline for a demo?
No they do not, unless you get a set of 83mm cranks and use the RF conversion kit to mount to the 73mm bb.

The issue with the new saint is that the chainring tabs are 2mm thicker than 'standard' on the outboard side. This will move any crank mounted bash, 2mm further from the chain. This can allow the chain to get jammed between the ring and bash. For now, the LG 1 or similar would be the best option IMO, but I would not be surprised if the major mfg built a saint specific bash soon.

You guys know that CRC is selling 2009 Saint arms for about $140? Pretty sure they have some 83mm and I know they have all 3 sizes in 68/73mm shells. Im kicking myself because I paid way more than that for 165mm's.

09 Demo's come with a P30 iirc. I have a P30 that I am modding right now to fit my new Saints, there really isnt that much that you have to do. In order for them to mount at all, you just have to clip/file whichever of the support nubs ends up under the crank arm and then file a little of the bash itself. Then it can be mounted. To get the bash itself closer to the chain, just file the spider side of the bash about 1-2mm. This is all approved by Gamut. If you can wait they are apparently going to have something for 2009 race season. Im not that patient.

Shimano probably wanted to sell more of its Saint bashguards by creating its own platform. Kind of like with its Centerlock rotors.

I am running the 2009 Saints with a MRP G2. Pretty nice setup, I havnt had a single problem, I cannot believe how tight the tolerances are. The whole setup is super strong, I have nailed it full guard into rock, not problems what so ever. I recommend the G2 and saint, I am waiting on my G2 Mini!
