Hey guys, I'm riding on an XL 2009 Marlin Disc. I have upgraded a bunch of components(mainly brakes), but I want to upgrade my fork. I don't want to go and break the budget, but does anyone have any incite on this? I have never changed a fork out before, so I don't know where to even start with sizing and such. Currently there is a Dart 2 100mm fork. I run a 185mm G2 rotor on it (yes, i know that it says only recommended 165mm).

Anyone have any suggestions/input/ideas?

Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing concerning the fork, the difference being I haven't bought the Marlin yet. It is my top 2 vs a Cdale F5.

The big concern I have is fork replacement/upgrade. Gary Fisher touts the fork as a component for the "improved" G2 geometry usinf a "RockShox Dart 2, 100mm travel, custom G2 Geometry 46mm offset crown". With the offset crown, how is the replacement/upgrade path limited as it doesn't appear to take the standard "out the box" fork that most retailers have.

Any clarification on that?

There are a few threads in here concerning that issue. A fork with the standard offset could certainly be used with the G2 frames, but it will slightly change the handling. If you go with a G2 fork, expect to pay top dollar, as it will probably have to be purchased through your local fisher dealer.

So, you say that I can go upgrade my fork, say to like a Rock Shox Tora or something and it will work?

How do I know what size tube to buy? Are they supposed to be standard and I cut them myself? Sorry, I'm a total newb to upgrading forks.

I have a 09 marlin and I was looking at doing the same thing until I went to the LBS. They wanted $400+ for a Tora shock w/ G2 geometry. I am leaving mine stock...

More info on swapping to non-G2 - Fisherbikes FAQ First question under "Component replacement/modifications"

Yes, you can run a fork that does not have the G2 offset. It will change the handling slightly, which may or may not be noticeable for you. I have no personal experience running a G2 frame without the custom offset.

You'll need a fork with a 1 1-8"(diameter - standard) steerer tube. The steerer tube will come at a standard length - cutting is up to you. Better off leaving it at the standard length because then you will not run into problems if you ever want to switch it to a frame that has longer headtube. Just take up the extra slack on the steerer tube by adding the desired amount of spacers, to get the bar height you prefer, on top of the stem.

Atleast look into something like a Tora 318 or any of the other Tora's with the motion control damping - otherwise it would not be a huge improvement over your current fork.

Awesome. Last question: Can i ugrade to a 120mm travel versus the 100mm I currently have?

Also, what forks would you guys recommend? I don't want to break the bank by any means, but i do need/want something better than the Dart 2. Ideally, 200-300 buck range. (I know that cheap but i'm a college student) On ebay i can get a 2008 new Tora 302 for 199 plus 30 shipping.

Check with Fisher on this one. Increasing the travel can change the handling and increase the amount of stress on the headtube.

Look for a Tora 318 or any other Tora with Motion Control.

The 302 will not be much of an improvement over the dart - same damper unit, just with bigger stanchions(32mm).
