09 Fuel EX BB confusion

2455 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  tussery
I am not too well versed when it comes to all the different types of BBs offered and I have no clue what kind my bike has.

I am looking into getting some new cranks and BB, but I don't know what kind to get. I am intrigued in the Hive fifteen.G cranks, but will their BB fit my bike? Will the crank work with the Hollowtech BB I have now?

I could really use some help here...

Thanks in advance,

D

ok, i have a 2009 Trek Fuel EX 9, and I like my shimano XT BB and crank, in fact I have just replaced my FSA BB and Crank on my hardtail to the same spec as i like it so much, smooth and efficient.
what are you hoping to achieve?
What's the confusion? If it has external cups you are pretty much set to use any crank with a threaded bottom bracket. Not like us 2010 Fuel Ex owners who are stuck with the press in Shimano BB or press in GXP BB.

Ah yes, thanks. That was the problem. I've been hearing so much about the EXs press in BB that I thought mine had it too.
So what size BB do I have though? BB30, BB90...?

Ummm... I have a EX 8 and my bike comes with a M542 crank. Not that bad, but not the lightest or stiffest by any stretch. So you have one guess as to what I am trying to achieve. ;)

If you have an EX 8, you have neither the BB30 or the BB90. You have the standard Shimano outboard bearing cups, which means you can use just about any BB/crank set up out there. The BB shell on the 2009 EX's are 68mm, so you should have 3 spacers between the cups and BB shell - one on one side and two on the other. This adapts the BB from standard 73mm to 68mm. If you upgrade to a new Shimano XT crank, just keep the spacers and reuse them to make sure your chainline is correct.

Or he could also just throw the XT cranks in without touching the current bottom bracket and save the new bottom bracket for when the current one wears out.
