    I live in an area were all the trails are rather sandy... but it's a fine silt in the mud, rather than your average 'desert sand.' Even a dry gravelly ride kicks up plenty of this silt into my chain. Now, making a chain 'clean' isn't rocket science, and it's certainly no issue to get the chain...
