Is this one of the ti bikes with rear suspension but no pivot? I remember seeing one years ago. How old is it and how's it ride?

Yes, this is the 2005 DEAN softail frame Duke Xlite CTI. I like the pivotless concept for the long marathon races here in the Swiss alps. The rear suspension (approx. 2.5")gives extra traction in rough uphills and some comfort downhill. But it is not comparable with the common fullsuspension frames. In fact the pivotless construction needs no replacement of bearings and bushings. The DT Swiss damper (the name says all..) is durable and well build. Over all the bike is stiff and light. The stiffness is better compared to my previous Litespeed Unicoi softail due to the carbon wrap arround the ti tubes.

I think the one I saw may have been made by Merlin (perhaps) sometime around 1995 - 98. I love that concept.

Sorry, the travel is just about 1" (2.54 cm) only. Moots and Seven are still producing Ti-softails.
