Gusto Cycles - Bikeshops, Taylors, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Medium size shop and repair department with well-selected offerings and good staff. All types of bikes are covered well, but Gusto's strongest point is mountain biking. They all ride dirt, have excellent technical tips to share, know the best places to ride around here, and really care about the sport. One is a pro rider for Cannondale.

I started coming to Gusto after they proved to be the only local shop that understood single speeding and could give me personally tested setup and gearing info. In case you're wondering...36:20 turning 26" wheels (or 32:20 if 29") is right for the hills around here. The rough terrain mandates good chain control. They're still my favorite shop in the Greenville area.

Mostly knowledgable staff, timely service, watch the labor pricing.

I'm not sure about Gusto anymore. I frequented them over the past two years, since buying my first FS bike (Jamis Dakar Sport) and their service & parts prices were always reasonable, and they were very helpful with a newbie like myself.

Recently I brought in a Cannondale Prophet that I bought used and needed some work to be done. I believe I got soaked on the shop labor prices (however, at least I was charged the exact same amount I was told over the phone) but didn't think much of it until I was talking about it to a friend later. I called another local shop and was quoted 1/2 to 1/3 of what I paid at Gusto.

Overall, I think they did me right in the past and I felt I could walk in and talk to anyone and get the right answer for what I needed. Now it seems there has been a change in staffing, or maybe mangement, and I'm not sure anymore. So my advice - proceed with caution. In the meantime, I'm going to another local shop for my tune-ups etc.

My description covers much of the material. Gusto is my favorite local shop. I've gotten the best advice, wrench work, and pricing from them. They understand and carry everything from single speed rigids through 27 speed high end dualies. As of this writing they are the only place locally that carries adult single speed bikes.

Customer Service

Excellent. Personable, they remember me and my preferences, and they follow up well on special order gear. These folks really ride, and it's obvious. Ask them about how to handle riding when its 20 degrees outside, and it turns out they were riding the same morning that you were.

When looking into converting my ride to single speed, I dropped into all the local shops. The message I got from the others, in a mix of words and expression, was "why would a gray haired older guy want to do that?" FWIW, I'm a reasonably fit rider despite being 47 and prematurely gray. Gusto's reaction was "no problem with that if you want a sweet ride!" They proceeded to enthusiastically show me their own single speed steeds and talk about how to get into it. A few months later and many rides all over the state later, I'm totally happy with the conversion.
