Used to go to the Woodbury location for many years. Got tired of their crabby mechanics (I started referring to them as Eeyores). Uninterested and unentusiatistic. I don't need to be "gushed" over but at least like walking into a bike a shop and appreciate people who at least least seem to enjoy what they are doing.

Tried to order a bolt for the Evo link of a Fuel Ex 8, it took 2 weeks and ended up with lame excuses about being then sent the wrong bolt length, wrong thread size. After 2 weeks never even heard from them again. Went to an independent bike shop, County Cycles, they had the bolt for me in 3 days.

I hear so many similar comments from other riders about bike shop chains like Penn Cycle. I will give my business to County Cycles (Trek dealer) from now on.

A decent selection of new bikes in Gary Fisher/Trek lines, as well as accessories. A clean, organized layout one would expect from a mainstream store. They seem to cater to Weekend Warriors and people new to biking with a large chunk of change to spend. They have no used parts whatsoever, so your used bike may be wheeled out with its issues unresolved. Spend that time simply going to a bike shop that deals with the full spectrum of needs, be it new, used, common or obscure brands and models.

Customer Service

Customer service is passable, but not terribly warm or welcoming. If you have an unorthodox problem, as in any issue with an older or obscure brand of cycle, don't use Penn as a resource. I personally got a vibe of "all problems are fixed by purchasing a new bike".

Use this store for only the most basic of cycling needs, if its closer to you than a better shop. Accessories, basic tune ups, etc. If I need a water bottle I go to Penn, since it's only a mile from my house.

Penn Cycle locations are your standard bike shops, decent selection of bikes (virtually all Trek/Gary Fisher). Good array of accessories. They offer the standard free tune-up. Good knowledgeable staff.

I rate their overall rating as a 3 because I'd like to see a wider selection of bikes. Cannondales, Specialized, etc, but that's not to say that Trek and Gary Fisher (same thing) don't make very good bikes.

Customer Service

My reasons for rating their customer service as a 3 are essentially dividing between my two bicycle purchasing experience. The first bike I purchased from them was their Richfield location where I got very good service (not necessarily fast service as it was busy). They offered me several bikes in my price range, displayed technical know-how, and were very polite. Richfield would get a 5, but they seem to be overworked/understaffed and haven't been able to fix anything within a reasonable time (up to a couple weeks waiting to get service performed).

However, they get a big fat 0 for customer service when I purchased a bike at their Eagan location. Considering I was spending a couple grand, I'd at least like courteous service. The guy said maybe two words to me, swiped my card and threw my receipt in the bag without even telling me about my free tune-up service or anything. I was pretty much an inconvenience to him. So we'll see if I go back.
