Only shop in SF that I have been to that actually knows about Mtn bikes. Most shops in SF don't want to deal with you unless your a hipster fixie rider or some type of road rider. Marcel knows MTN bikes, I don't go in there enough for him to remember me, but he always asks what I ride, how often I ride and a couple times, asked me to go on a ride.

Customer Service

great customer service, like I said Marcel always wants to talk bikes and the times he is not there the other shop guys are cool and don't make you feel like a dumbass for asking some basic questions.
I do have to say that one time I went in and the only two guys were working on a road and a city bike and they kind of made me feel stupid for the questions I asked but the next time I went in the counter people were great and the mechs were working on a sick downhill bike and answered my questions in a polite and sincere way

High Trails is SF's newest bike shop. They have a great location right on Polk Street. They seem to be very knowledgable about longer travel xc/all mountain bikes which is rare for a shop in the city. The vibe is good and they are usually showing a MTB video on the big screen. If you're a mountain biker stuck in the city...check these guys out! They can dial-in your bike and they know some great places to ride.

Customer Service

These guys are on it! Super friendly and helpfull.
No pressure, No nonsense, No attitude, No worries...

On my recent visit to San Francisco I stopped by High Trails Cyclery. The first thing that I noticed was how clean and professional the shop was. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and easy going. They patiently answered all of my questions. I am not very tech savy when it comes to bikes, but I felt very comfortable given my riding experience and goals that I was pointed me in the right direction for a bike best suited for my needs. I noticed that other customers were also welcomed with a smile and given full attention and great customer service. This is a great bike shop.

Marcel spent a lot of time getting the details right before launghing High Trail's and it shows. The store is clean, bright, and fully stocked with all the goodies a bay area rider could want.

I was very impressed by the variety of bikes they had. Many city shops focus on lower end inventory they can turn a quick profit on and will only order the good stuff in once they have a deposit from you, which is why the internet does so much business.

High Trails has it all: a great variety of higher end SPECIALIZED mountain and road bikes, but now they have brought in a premium niche brand: TURNER! Bringing the good stuff out of the catalog and onto the floor is what gets me and other educated buyers into a shop. We know what we want... just put it in front of us!

Customer Service

Rule of thumb: If you don't greet me first, the biggest sale you'll get out of me is tubes... and I typically run tubeless.

In my opinion, during a any bike purchase there should always be a point where the sales associate's love of the sport becomes visibly geniune. It's at this point a the transaction becomes personal and less rigid. Buying a bike SHOULD be an emotionally satisfying experience, not 9 rounds of bare knuckle boxing. Failure to attempt to do this on the salespersons side with a Newbie leads to a bike that collects dust. On an enthusiate's side it certainly won't lead to a repeat customer.

High Trails is thorough from the moment you walk in, to the afterhours shop fittings, to the shop rides these guys lead in their spare time.

I met Marcel the shop owner up in Downieville almost 10 years ago. As he built his business I started to buy all my bikes and components from him. He knows what he is talking about, for both road and dirt and most importantly wants his customers to get what is right for them.

Customer Service

Whenever a friend of mine wants to get into biking or triathlon I always send them to marcel and they are always stoked, both by their new bike and the way they were treated.

Unlike almost every other bike store I know, Marcel and the rest of his team have a great positive attitude and are very friendly and welcoming.

The other key thing to mention is that Hightrails is a Specialized dealer. I am a bike snob and own 7 hand-built bikes, but if I had to go out tomorrow and buy a new road bike it would be the Specialized Tarmac. If I had to pick one brand to buy my bike stuff from it would be Specialized.

Marcel has their bikes PLUS their helmets, shoes, gloves, etc. Really high-quality stuff for non-Italian prices.
