I can't believe this trail wasn't on here, but most people serious enough to use will consider this trail system beneath them. There are valid and invalid reasons for this attitude.

First, some history. These trails, previous to some time in 2009, were double track and included four trails, a number of which overlapped. Total mileage was about five and a half miles, which includes overlap miles, so really more like four. While you had to do a lot of repetition if you wanted to make the trip worth it, the trails did have many virtues, variety among them. Some great downhills, nice climbs, a flat trip through a pine forest, and a wonderful roller coaster to return you to the parking lot. Pretty fun for experienced riders and a great place to take kids.

Fast forward to today. All of the trails mentioned above are now closed to riding. They are now walking trails only--which they already were before--and winter cross country ski trails. What a backward move, DNR. But wait! There is compensation. What they give riders back is the following: four new single track trails totaling a whopping 4 miles. It's debatable which set-up is better. The new trails--which unadvisedly are two way--are actually beautifully made. Someone definitely knew what they were doing, and the routes go through an exquisite variety of settings for around here. The trails will appeal to the same clientele as before--experienced riders as well as beginners and kids who don't mind a lot of short risers. (They also, apparently, appeal to idiots with shotguns as some nob blew one off not 100 yards from us, but that's a different story.) The new trails are erratically marked, so study the map before you start--if you don't you'll eventually find your way back, unless your sense of direction is poor.

The obvious question is this: Couldn't this trail system have kept the old trails for bikers in addition to the new ones? The reason so few mountain bikers come here is precisely because there isn't enough riding to be done. The place has been aching for more trails! Four miles of single track does not a trail system make!

Would I go back? Well, yes, but only with my kids, for which it is well-suited.
