Snowshoe to Bald Knob - TRAIL

Snowshoe to Bald Knob - Trail, Slatyfork, Virginia

Descend the service road to Shavers Fork, cross the creek and climb to the railroad crossing (Cass Scenic Railroad). Continue straight across the tracks, take the fireroad up the mountian which climbs at a steeper grade than the RR bed below and to the left. Continue on fireroad to top of mountain and overlook (the Cass railhead). On the way back just off the summit, there is a spur road (about 3/10 mile in length) to the left which takes you to the firetower and Bald Knob. Great views from the top of the tower, but climb at your own risk. Elevations at Snowshoe Mountain and Bald Knob are about 4,800', Shavers Fork about 3,900'.

Easy descent from top of Snowshoe Mountain to Shavers Fork on well-maintained roads. The climb after crossing the railroad tracks is steady and the fireroad is overgrown (grass) in areas. Closer to the summit, the road parallels the railroad track and is washed out in places. The spur to the top of Bald Knob is steep and washed out in several areas. The trip is not very technical, but does require endurance for the climbs. It offers spectacular views of Cheat Mountain and Back Allegheny Mountain in West Virginia, and Jack Mountain and Shenandoah Mountain in Highland County, Virgina.
