Base Trails - TRAIL

Base Trails - Trail, Slatyfork, Virginia

Several Trails make up this system. They all loop back to FS 24 sooner or later. Elk River Touring has maps and suggestions. First left is Roaring Run a nice technical climb and sweet downhill. The first right is the exit for Rocks & Roots. It is best ridden the other way. The 2nd right is Easy Way a piece of smooth buff singletrack that leads to Rocks & Roots. The 3rd right is the lower Funk trail. Up and down and a huge log(30") to ride over just before the connector to Rocks & Roots and Easy way. The second left is the other end of Roaring Run. The 4th right is the Funk trail fast and zippy it will take you to the Lower Funk trail and that huge log. Enjoy we are constantly adding new sections and tricky bits.

This section is actually for the trails off Mine Rd. and down in the area of Elk River Touring Center. If you are looking for swooping, smooth, sculptured singletrack then you will be better off going to a bike park. These trails are for the person wanting the challenge of Cross Country and not just a ride in the park.

I myself feel the trails in Pocahontas County are the most awesome XC trails in the state. And I've ridden them all. Yes, it is fun to hit those nice fast swoopy trails once in a while. That's when I go ride Mountwood Park, Charles Fork Lake or something in that caliber. But when I want to get back into the outdoors and challenge my abilities I ride in Pocahontas County. Which includes, Slatyfork, Tea Creek, Cranberry, Kennison Mtn., and more.

Enjoy

Same Shiite as the Gualey Mtn. Trails. Roads or old rail beds Built to pilfer the natural resources of a century ago.all they pilfer now is yours and mine(once) tourist dollars. The trails are and were overgrown. Good SINGLETRACK does not get overgrown. A little tight yes, overgrown-- ummm no. I enjoy a challenge as much or more than most but these trails are not trails, they are old road beds. Yes they go up, yes they go down, yes they have rocks, yes they have roots butno they are not SINGLETRACK in any sense. Ohh and the food in MAR VEGAS SUCKS.. Jeez, whats with the price of stuff at the Foodland in Mar Vegas ( Marlinton)??? Nobody makes squat for money and they screw you on food at the supermarket there.

Gas prices have come down..... SCREW IT AND JUST GO TO PISGAH. THIS PLACE SUCKS Plain and Simple.

Similar Products Used: Greenbriar trail with your wife and kids and a BOB trailer. Gotta spend time with your offspring and your better half. Its not all about you buster. Wautaga Park is primo camping and the meager singletrack there is better than what you find up on the mountain. Bring some food from home or catch it out of the Greenbriar River cuz you ain't gettin' it in Marlinton.

Many parts of this trail are severely over-grown now, and there are a few trees down that block parts of the singletrack. It was actually hard to spot some parts of the trail - it just seems to disappear into the woods at times, and we had to walk our bikes back to a section where the trail was more evident and back track a little. We did a lot of climbing in spongy ground and leaves. Maybe it is just this time of year and the locals won't bother with it until after ski season? That being said, the overall flow of the trail is great. It was still a lot of fun to fly down the fire road trail, black cherry trail, etc. Nice climbs to get your legs burning. Top quality singletrack -I look forward to riding it again in the summer.

Fun stuff, good variety, excellent for figuring out what you want to ride on top of Gauley Mtn.

Customer Service

Left onto Roaring Run and climb. Pop out onto FS 24 and hang left and continue to climb. Keep an eye to the right, when you see what looks like a gravel road shooting down take it and head for the log pile. Across the logs and your on the Funk trail. Zip along until a intersection with a huge log down just past it. Hang a left here and then follow the signs for rocks and roots. several big rocks, drops, sliders, and bridges later pop out onto FS 24 across from where you went in. Hang right and then right again climbing over th pile of gravel. Take your first left and climb till you can take a right. At this point you'll have ridden almost everything and can go out either way to FS 24. Climb back up to the top of roaring Run and scream it downhill.

The Base trails are a nice network of mostly singletrack. Good variety, nice climbs, ok for beginners and fun for advanced. The real treat is to ride with a guide from Elk River Touring (Rich is awesome!!!). Have him take you up to Bear Pen or even better, the Cranberry Wilderness. Cranberry is by far the best ride I have ever been on. The folks at Elk River really do a fantastic job. They make sure you have plenty of trailside food so you can ride ALL DAY.
Our technical skills improved so much thanks to Rich. Rich if you ever read this thanks so much, and drop me an e-mail.

Wow this trail system sucks! Definitely don't go after it rains. The trails are way eroded and the bedrock shows. It seems that the people here need to get together and do some research on trail maintenance. I guess I'm lucky to ride nice single track thanks to Pisgah, NC. But the only reason is due to people really caring for these trails. The trails here have lots of potential but need a lot of care.

Wasn't a big fan of Roaring Run, but Powerline Trail is a lot of fun. A few short climbs made worthwhile by the twisty downhills. Somewhat technical with roots and rocks, tipical WV riding. Great intro trail for this area, tight singletrack all the way. Roaring Run is much more technical and harder to keep momentum.

Customer Service

Buy a map from ertc.com, ride how it suggests: clockwise starting on Roaring Run and finishing with Powerline Trail.
