This is a rail trail with some nice scenery. Practically all flat with a decent gravel surface. I rode the trail when my family was visiting Fairmont on other business and found the people I met there to be very helpful. Especially nice was the combination bike shop and restaurant called the Old Town Depot in Monongah. This town was also the site of an infamous mining disaster, which you can learn more about at the "depot". I would have to disagree with the rating of this ride being intermidiate. It's an easy and somewhat scenic ride suitable for the whole family.

Similar Products Used: There is a short rail trail at Pricket's Fort State Park in Fairmont that is also nice for the family. At one end is a lighted tunnel, and at the other is a recreation of a fronteir fort.

Trail Is Good Gravel Surface And Almost Level.
Great Trail For A Family Outing.
Would Be Nice If Trail Hooked-Up With Other Trails,
It Dead-Ends On Both Ends (Fairmont-Shinnston).
Needs To Extend Thru Fairmont And Tie-In To Clarksburg
Trail. ( Maybe Some Day )

Easy riding for those that don't like hills. However, don't go here if your wanting an all out Mountain Bike ride. Its good for a Sunday afternoon ride in the park.

I Have Rode A Lot Of Rail-Trails In The State And This One Has The Best Base Of All. If The People That Put The 3/4" Rock On The Other Trails Had To Ride It,They Would Understand Why The Shinnston Trail Uses Pea Gravel Or Crush & Run. No Bone Jarring On This Trail. A Thumbs-Up To The Shinnston Rail-Trail People! (Fine Job And Many Thanks)

The trail is great for little workouts, the grade is very level, and smooth, unlike most railtrails the grade is a fine grinded rock not gravel.

This Trail is Good for one thing. When I want to ride with my grandma she can keep up. If you ride vallyfalls or watersmith dont even bother with this trail you will quickly get board BUT! if you are just a starter this is the best railtrail to start on Its Smoooooth ! Have fun!!

I have ridden on many WV trails and I find this one to very enjoyable. The packed limestone surface is easy to ride on. The route manely flat. Great for a family outing. When I went this spring I even saw a few waterfalls.

Customer Service

Start by parking at the end of Mahlon St. in Shinnston. The trail begins there under the U.S. 19 bridge. Continue onto Fairmont about 15 miles one way.

Similar Products Used: I live in Morgantown so I have to tell you about the Mon. River Trail., it's great! You can start at the trail head on the warf district downtown. Biking north takes you to Star City, south can take you all the way to the Uffington bridge. It's 51/2 miles of asphalt trail, the rest packed limestone.

This trail is ridden regulary. It is in good condition. Nice slopes and long grades. Regular rest stops and friendly folks walk it enough. Horse poop and hoove holes aret he only real drawback. I ride every Sat/Sun at 6:30 AM. Ride time averages 2 - 2.5 hours round trip depending on trail squish. Watch for the occasional dog; loud whistle or mace comes in handy very rarely.

Customer Service

Start behind Big Lots in Fairmont. Go to Edgeway Drive and follow down around to the end. Trail head pops out of nowhere. Go down the very steep gravel road and turn right onto the trail. 14.5 miles to Shinnston from there. I recommend either going to the Shop-N-Save in Shinnston for a snack at the end or the Dairy Queen for refreshments.

Similar Products Used: The RailTrail from Prickett's Fort to Morgantown is open - 18 miles each way. Top is still very rough in some spots - definitely don't stop in these areas or you won't get started and a walkout is going to be tougher. The trail will be one of the best around when top is finished. Beautiful canopy cover from the sun and elements. River side ride the entire way. Long stretches of nature.
