High Drive Cliffs - TRAIL

High Drive Cliffs - Trail, Spokane, Washington

Multiple trails criss-cross the steep west & south sides of Spokane's South Hill 'hood. Trails stretch from the I-90 freeway to S. Hatch road. For most of the breadth of the area, three trails (hi, mid & low) traverse on fairly flat trajectories; climbs between the traverses can be quite steep. Not overly technical, but the narrow singletrack on steep cliffs can cause vertigo and high consequences for small errors. Urban trails, so watch for hikers and dogs. Be kind - Spokanoids are/prefer friendly.

I am fortunate to live two blocks away from this trail. The line across the top sees a lot of traffic; hikers, dog walkers, trail runners. Most people start from Poly Judd Park on 14th and head south, so the first few miles are congested, particularly on weekends and in the evenings when us locals are getting off work. You might want to take it slow for the first few miles. The top trail is fairly non-technical, but fun and fast. I use it as my cyclocross training course. The lower trails and trails going up and down the side of the bluff are more fun on a mountain bike and offer twisty descents with swooping trails and banked turns, once you’ve gone down the bluff to the bottom near the gulf course, there’s no escaping the climbing you’ll have to do to get back to High Drive. One thing to consider If you have an irrational fear of heights or aren’t confident with your ability to stay on the trail is that there several sections of the trail along a drop-off that some might find frightening.

Great views from the high (500ft?) cliff. Vegetation changes from meadow to fairly dense forest as you head south. Some very narrow singletrack demands sharp focus.

Lots of entry points along High Drive (exit 280, head south on Maple, which becomes High Drive). This area connects with Riverside park via the Southwest Passage.
