Mt. Constitution - TRAIL

Mt. Constitution - Trail, Orcas Island in the San Juans, Washington

There are 100's of trails up here and it is easy to get turned around. The climbs and especially the descents are the best in my years of riding all over the continental U.S. Be carefull at the top of Mount Constitution the trails are narrow with many several hundred foot drop offs off of the trail. The views are spectacular from the top. Vancouver B.C. can be seen from almost a 3,000 ft elevation at dusk and dawn.

I really love these trails at Moran St. Park on the Island or Orcas. Great in the winter as even when it rains the trails are not too muddy, and any standing water is clear, not brown from mud. Between Sept-May most trails are open for riding, in the summer very few are open plus you'll be seeing lots of vacationers in the summer. The original post says 100's of trails, actually there are about 20! Great views, scenery, trails are sweet with either flat XC to big climbs and flowing downhill. Many loop options or out-N-back. We go here at least once a year in the winter months.

My fav is up the curvy road from Cascade Lake, to the first trail on the right that goes up to the top of the mountain. Follow that trail to Cold Springs, head toward Cold Springs then stay right on the trail that goes down around the mountain. It is all downhill and really fun with great flow. Once you get to Twin lakes, can either go around those, or head towards the Mountain Lake parking area. Go around Mt. Lake on the left. This part is fairly flat but totally fun to ride. I love that section. Then at the damn, take a left towards Cascade Lake. Take that trail all the way back to your car. Mostly downhill as well and fast.

Very sweet -- especially the single track which gets technical (steep descents, climbs, logs, switchbacks). The trails in the Southeast corner get very low use. I've been there only once and rode every day. Just beautiful!

A word of warning -- nettles abound. Wear long sleeves and tights.

Cheers,
Tim

This ride is closed to mountain bikes on May 15 so you will have to walk it if you want to check it out in the summer. I just rode it (March 6) and there is still snow at the top. Get to the ferry dock at least 60 minutes before hand as I hear the lines suck on the weekends and you might miss your ride. I would recommend catching the 5:15AM ferry to Orcas and catching the 5:10PM one back. You need that much time to checkout everything without being rushed. The Mountain lake ride is great for begginers while the single track that leads to the stone lookout tower is very steep and technical for more advanced riders.

Used to live on Orcas & rode these trails extensively. The trail down from Cold springs is a blast, quite fast & a little sketchy in spots. There are trails for virtually every skill level in Moran State Park, But the trails close to bikes in the spring, check with the ranger station before you ride to be sure. When you get to Orcas, stop in to Wildlife Cycles in the main town of Eastsound. Nick & Carolyn have extensive knowledge of these trails & can set you up on some killer rides. They also have maps & spare tubes, believe me, you will need them! I miss these trails!
