Freund Creek - Trail, Leavenworth, Washington

Freund Creek - Trail, Leavenworth, Washington

DESCRIPTION

The main loop follows up Freund Creek road for a few miles to its end. A single track trail continues from there, continuing to snake its way up the side of the canyon ridge. After about 5 miles the trail tops out and comes to a clearing in a saddle. Some other trails can be seen following up the ridge on either side of the saddle, but the main loop starts going down an old fire road grade. The trail continuously goes down for 4 or 5 miles back to Freund Creek road.

There are adequate descriptions of the trail elsewhere, I'm just posting a link to the topoggraphical map:

Freund Canyon is a great skill builder and work out trail. Its 4.5 miles up with a gain of 1500 feet and 4 miles down. A strong mountain biker can ride the whole loop in an hour or less. The trail is relatively smooth and the grade is fairly constant. A strong rider will not need to push anywhere, others may find a couple of spots. The down hill is laced with water bars that need to be taken with some caution. When you get done go ride it again. Where else can you do 3000 feet of elevation gain and cover more than 17 miles in 2 hours all on single track?

Customer Service

Ride the loop counter-clockwise. Ignore the sign pointing to Freund Canyon trail, contnue up the dirt road until it turns to single track.

Nothing to spectacular. The down is over far to quickly for the effort it takes to reach the top. It took only 15 minuets to complete the downhill. Only worth it if you are truly looking for a short ride.

I went to Der Sportsman in town to rent a bike. Interestingly, this trail was the only local trail that they had any specific info on. I knew of other great trails in the area such as Devils Gulch, but they had no more info than what was printed in the guidebooks that they sold.

So I followed the route described above and it was fun. Nothing technical, but a great workout and some great views. I also scoped out the singletrack that spun off in either direction at the saddle at the top of the main loop. One appears to be only rideable by coming down from higher on the ridge. The other goes up and over the end of ridge and then steeply down, back towards Freund Creek road somehow. I didn't follow it but it did look interesting (another day).

Shortly after the saddle when descending back down, there is an old fire road grade that splits off to the right. I took this grade, which is flat for a 1/2 a mile or so, and meets up with another Fire road. This is spur 120 of FR 7071. Follow this until you get to FR 7071. Then, if you follow this road down, it turns into Ranger road going into Leavenworth. If you follow this up, it goes up Tumwater mountain continuously. I went up and could see the Freund Creek loop from above. It appeared that the spur 121 might descend back down to the saddle on the Freund Creek loop, but I'm not sure. Anyway I kept going on FR 7071, gaining another 1000 ft. elevation, until it ran out to some more spurs. I followed spur 325 as high as it went. Still I had to get off the bike and hike up 500 ft. vertical to get to the top of Tumwater mountain. A lot of work but worth the effort, as I could get a 360 degree view, including Icicle Ridge to the West, Snowy peaks of the North Cascades, and out to the high plains towards Wenatchee.

The main loop will take a couple of hours and is certainly a good workout, including a gain of nearly 2000 ft. in elevation. The views get better as you climb higher. The singletrack has berms every few hundred feet, which gives the downhill portion of the trail some interesting airborne opportunities.

8.5 miles when doing just the loop, approx. the same amount up and down. Park in town and ride out Chumstick Canyon Road a couple miles for a gentle warmup. Trail recommended by the guys at Das Rad Haus. Great shop and very helpful and they gave me a map.

The ride up is a nice climb, first on road, then good singletrack. Once at the saddle, a trail along the ridge (firebreak) intersects the main loop road/trail. I climbed this ridge (hike a bike) to where it once again is on road. You can ride the road to within a few hundred feet of the top of the Mountain and then climb on foot to great views. Ride back partly down the road, but keep eyes open for a burly track that descends the ridge back to the trail you hiked up, then down to the saddle, past the saddle, and eventually down to the trail you climbed originally. This last fork can be deceptive, as you're smoking along. This trip down the ridge is called Ribbed and has drops, jumps, log rides, and other good stunts. The rims were smoking at the bottom, but one can clean it with a sturdy hartail. Ride back up to the saddle, then descend the road/trail full of big waterbars and stay off the brakes for some good air time.

Customer Service

Follow Dani's route up to the saddle and up to the top of Tumwater Mountain for the views. Then descend the ridge past the saddle to where it connects with the trail you originally ascended. Ride back up to saddle, then down the other side to complete the original loop.

Nothing spectacular a few nice views from the top. Watch out for the first creek as you start the decent, for inexperienced riders that can be tretcherous and they might crash and have their bike go into the creek.

Customer Service

Directions are easy especially from the rather attractive lady at the bike store in Leavenworth.
