Crystal Mtn. - TRAIL

Crystal Mtn. - Trail, Enumclaw, Washington

At this place you buy a lift ticket(~$10) and ride down. This is for the lazy people who dont want to ride uphill.

love this place, definitely CAN NOT RIDE THE LIFT UP! I have no clue why it says that. Anyways, this place is amazing lots of pushing your bike up but totally worth it for the ride down. Lots of area's where you can completely let off the brakes and smash! But also spots with large rocks on steep faces. Amazing views as well, including the best view ever of mt. rainier along with little hidden lakes, flower packed valleys and insane mountains. LOVE THIS PLACE

i "rode" this trail yesterday and had a blast. like the other reviews say this ride requires alot of hiking, i am in decent shape and i only rode about 1/3 of the way up the rest was hiking. the downhill section of it is very fast if you want it to be, my brakes were not doing very well so i took it pretty slow.

dont forget the bugspray if you are hiking/biking up!

Customer Service

i only know of one trail up but in places the trail is difficult to find so it is best if you go with someone who has ridden the trail before

Heh this is such an awesome place. There are so many trails and it is so beatiful, especially up near east peak where there are rolling hills of green meadows. Going up is tough, best if you're into hiking. I can ride up most of the first 1/3 of the mountain but after that is gets really steep and I have to walk. You can ride the chair if you want, but I think it's pricy, and that's the easiest part to get up so I don't mind riding/hiking it. They won't take you up to the top, which I think is actually kindof nice cause it makes this a less used trail since most people are not willing to hike their ride, fine with me :). It's a long ride down and you can cover a LOT of terrain in a run.

Customer Service

Hike up to the summit house, take the backside to the bottom of powder bowl, and traverse bear pits to chair 9 area. Riding across the bottom of powder is a great place to get some real speed up on a narrow trail.

I tend to rate trails on a Porcupine Rim (Moab) scale - Porcupine being a 10. Based on that scale I give Crystal Mt. about a 9. The only shortcoming of this trail is the fact that the downhill section could be more technical. Even so, it is the best smooth singletrack that I have ever ridden (I don't normally like smooth singletrack). It is super fast, the turns are banked, and it goes on forever. The lower 1/3 of the downhille does have some air opportunities if you look for them. The ride itself is awe inspiring. I'm not easily impressed by views anymore but this competes with anything I've ever seen. This is a ride for seasoned riders only. Do not use this ride as a way to break in a new riding buddy or impress a girl. Also, this is a fair whether ride - literally. Don't do this ride in anything than less than perfect weather. Even then you will find yourself cold in the shade and baking in the sun. Oh yeah, the climb is not trivial. I like to climb so I didn't complain much. I do recommend that you be in pretty good shape for this on or you may not enjoy it so much. Those things aside, I would argue that this is a ride that every serious mountain biker should do at least once.

Customer Service

As mentioned elswhere, get the book "kissing the trail". I would also use this ride as an excuse to buy that ninety dollar GPS that you have always wanted. There are lots of spurs from the main trail. The trouble is that you can loose several hundred feet of elevation in no time by taking the wrong path. Personally, I liked parking at the ski lodge and meeting up with the trail at the first lake. Long mind-numming fire roads don't do it for me.

Save the 10 bucks, ride to the summit. Due to LOTS of snow, probably won't be able to ride this until mid August this year. A must do!

Customer Service

Contrary to the derogatory comments above, save the 10 bucks and ride to the summit. The first half isn't bad. The second half of the climb gets a little steeper and less traction. It's a doable climb and should take no more than an hour. At the top, you're rewarded with a great view; looks of mixed awe / you're a complete idiot from tourists who rode he lifts up; and lunch and a beer in the lodge if you so desire. After recouping from the climb, head across the ridge (ask somebody at the lodge at they'll point you to the trail). Your reward for the climb is a killer down hill single track (about 12 - 15 miles long I think) which mixes technical switch backs with smooth, no-brakes flying. You'll come out on the road (Crystal Mountain Highway) about 1/2 mile below the parking lot.

I used to be much more enthusiastic about Crystal before I discovered the other great trails in the region (off of Highway 410). Do yourself a favor if you are contemplating Crystal by buying yourself a copy of John Zilly's excellent book "Kissing the Trail," then riding Noble Knob or Skookum Flats instead.

Of course, if you insist on riding the lift up to the top, Crystal is your only option...

Customer Service

Starting from the lodge, looking up Quicksilver, head right on the cat track (from Green Valley). When you can, jump off on singletrack - most of which is straight across the slope, parallel to Crystal Mtn. Rd.

THIS THE STUFF WORLD CUPS SHOULD BE COPIED FROM. THE DOWNHILL SECTIONS ARE NARLY. NASTY PEOPLE WITH A PENCHANT FOR MOTO MADNESS WILL THRIVE HERE. IF THERE IS SNOW, DON'T SCEEZE OUT, PRACTICE LIKE YOUR GOING TO WINTER X. IF NOT WAIT TILL IT CLEARS AND BE IN HEAVEN. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DUAL BOINGER IT'S THE BOMB.

Customer Service

DON'T BE A ROADIE WUSS, MOTO TO THE TOP WITH YOUR DUAL SHOCKS. ASK THE LOCALS FOR DIRECTIONS. SAVE THE BUCKS FOR BEER AND SNACKS WHEN BENCH RACING LATER.

Great riding but this place needs more trail maintence. If you and your friends go up for the week end try to spend at least a little time getting the trail in shape. Lots of other trails can be made if people just take the time to clear them. Hopefully with the NORBA race coming this summer hopefully the managment will spend some time on new trails!

Customer Service

Save the dough ($14 this year!) huff it up the Jim Town trail. Great riding and excellent pay off. The northway trail is one of the best down hill trails any where. All single track lots of views (if you are going slow enough) Spend your lift ticket money on lunch at the top before you descend.

Be conscious of weather conditions, and pack more clothes than you'd think necessary--your going to have a good heat on from the climb, but changing weather combined with a rest at the top and 11 miles of descent can really, really cool you off. So, ride prepared for dramatic shifts in the weather, climb on your bike, and then enjoy one of the best 11 miles of singletrack the state has to offer. It is the descent that gets this ride to 5 star status.

Customer Service

To truly enjoy the downhill, the climb should be on top of your bike, not a chairlift. Only the last two miles of climb are what I would classify as grueling, the rest is, well, mountain biking.

Lots of new trails in the Boondoggle area as well for the recent NORBA race that was at Crystal Ride up the chair 4 line look for the trail on the left it is a great trail down.

Customer Service

Take the chair up ride up toward chair one on the right you will see a new trail (beg/sport course) It is a real nice trail. It needs some help if it is going to stand up to much more riding so spend a little time repairing some bad spots!
