Route 7 to Reston - TRAIL

Route 7 to Reston - Trail, Tysons Corner, Virginia

Easy, fun single track that mostly climbs on your way out to Reston. A couple of really good short, steep climbs, nothing too challenging but enough to get your heart and lungs moving. A great winter night ride. It is usually pretty dry with only one or two small streams to cross. The great thing is you get to the singletrack of the Reston trail without having to get your feet wet with the 3 stream crossings from Difficult Run parking lot. This has been the perfect place to ride at night this winter. Just long enough to get a good burn and yet short enough that you don't freeze your ass off.

I think that Whit used the term "singletrack" lightly when he posted this trail. It is singletrack in that there is only one path but it rarely is less than four feet wide. Don't get me wrong, it's a great trail with a few good climbs but it doesn't fit my description of singletrack.
There is nothing on this ride that isn't rideable by people of all levels. The downhills are great for beginners trying to gain confidence or experts honing their skills at high speed. The ups can be taken in a granny gear for those with small lungs or really cranked for those in training. It is a fun trail that I have to give a five because it has taught me a lot over the years.

I much prefer to park at the Reston Ice Forum off Sunset Mills Road. From there you can ride to Great Falls and Work that into your ride making for an epic day.

Great ride for speed. There are hills that are short and quick to give you that speed through the woods. Its wide enough for mistakes and rough enough to cause them if you go fast.

A nice evening ride for the family, or an intense training excursion for the athlete. I recommend going through Runemede Park for some "off-road" biking, however high-speed fun is always available on the asphalt path. PEACE

Being that this is literally my back yard, I love this trail. I agree, it isn't what I would call singletrack, I like to think of it as more of a playground. I don't know that I would drive far to get to it, but I do love riding it a couple times a week. I is a very good trail for keeping your skills up, enough to work you, but easy enough to have fun on.

To my knowledge this trail is actually called "Colvin Run". Parking at the mill on Route 7 the trail head is across "7" and on the right. Out and back is about is about 14 miles if you turn left down the W&OD bike trail(at the fitness center) to some connecting trails that end up in Reston. Going the other direction from the mill parking lot takes you to Great falls.

My friends and I call this the 'reston run' and for the sake of simplicity 'Michael Faraday trail'. The trail starts with a fun downhill in reston adjacent to the Wiehle ave exit on the toll road. Granted the trail is very wide most of the way, but this is good. Horses are often on the trail as well. plus this gives those of us that are fast plenty of room to pass.

From the above reccomended starting spot on route 7 it is possible to ride difficult run towards vienna and pickup the W&OD bike path. Traveling along difficult run in the other direction and you find your way to great falls. Note: the trail to great falls requires getting your feet soaked crossing the creek and it is ususally VERY VERY muddy. Its a fun ride, just be prepared to get a bit dirty.

enjoy.
