Carvins Cove - TRAIL

Carvins Cove - Trail, Roanoke, Virginia

There are a bunch of trails and lots of great single track. Ups and downs with a very technical feel. Some is easier than other parts. Several big climbs up either single track or fire roads. You start in on a gravel road, about a tenth of a mile in the single track is on the right. Start there or wherever and have fun, because you will.

Cavins Cove was a destination for two days of riding. I enjoyed the multtiple loops that allowed for a lot of flexibility. The trails were well groomed and allows for each person to push their own pace. The map at the trailhead did not have an indication of where we were upon the start, which caused a bit of confusion, but a race team exited just in time to provide us with key information. It seems to be a spot for all levels.

I have ridden Songbird, Enchanted Forest, Four Gorges, Schoolhouse and a couple of others I cannot remember the name of.

For beginners I would recommend Songbird, and Enchanted Forest Trails. Start of Songbird is a mild steady climb at first but it makes for a nice descent when going back the other way. Four Gorges is a little more difficult and can be steep in a couple of places. I Did see a bear off Songbird trail back in the summer when I was in the area.

Customer Service

Took Four Gorges then went downhill on a maintenance road down to Songbird, then to enchanted forest, around Schoolhouse loop the returned via Songbird and the road back to the trailhead.

Will visit again next Summer and explore other trails.

Rode at this park on June 19th, 2011. It was a Sunday and the parking lot was full of cars but the park is big enough I only passed a few riders on the trails. I only had a couple of hours but the trails were well marked and well maintained. There is a $2 fee to use the trails which is fine and good but the bike shop that sells the pass and is closest to the parking area is closed on Sundays. You have to go all the way to the marina on the other side of the lake. Park officials may want to consider a self-serve pay station in the parking lot as used in many other parks.
Once you climb to the trail on the ridge you get some nice views of the surrounding area. Then enjoy the ride all the way back down.

Carvins is closed until further notice due to fire damage. Check with the ranger station or just the right gear before you go to see if they have reopened yet.

Carvin's is a hoot. the locals have done an OUTSTANDing job with their focused and 1st class trail work. Every time I visit I am blown away with the new and fun sections they have added or improved. We are so lucky to have 1st rate riding like this here in SW Virginia.

FunHouse lives up to the name. Race your buddies down Hi-Dee-Ho. Last one down buys the beer.

Trails range from very difficult to very easy, recently put up wooden sign telling you where the trails are. Very helpful. Could easily ride all day if possible.

Customer Service

park at bennet springs side, go up buck, ride up the fire road to the gauntlet, ride down gauntlet and come back up the trough, then ride back up the fire road to hi dee hoe and ride down to the parking lot. Route looks like a figure 8 on the map. Take plenty of water and bandaids

There are some awesome single-track trails in here. The Enchanted forest trail is probable the easiest and even a beginner could do it. I wound not recommend riding this trail the day after it rains unless you really want to get extremely muddy. There are also some very long hard tiring climbs but coming down makes up for it. Be careful and have fun!

Carvin's has a vast network of trails for all abilities. The trail system really wicks water away well for trail riding quickly after rain but watch out for horse traffic (at least on the mountain side, don't know about the lower trails). Some trails (Buck) have been really messed up with hoof traffic. The newest trail (connector) is going along real well with work currently be done on a bridge of three ravines. The connector trail hasn't been added to any maps that I have seen but connects Hi-De-Hoe to the main fire road.

It is a pay to ride trail system but well worth the money. Daily or yearly passes can be picked up at Just the Right Gear (www.justtherightgear.com) or the Ranger Station on the marina side.

Customer Service

Many different variations depending on what you are looking for.

Largest Elevation gain/loss: Gaunlet, Trough, Bucks Rutt, Clown Head and Hi-De-Ho .. Fire Road is a little over 1100 ft climb base to top.
