Cross Country Trail - Trail, Reston, Virginia

Cross Country Trail - Trail, Reston, Virginia

DESCRIPTION

The trail starts at Great Falls Park and goes all the way to Occoquan Regional Park. Its over 40 miles long and is connected with lots of other trails. There are only ten maps along the way and some of the signs the say CT are misleading so when you see a sign you should look at it carefully to make sure you dont go on one of the side trails. It ranges from pavement to dirt and can get pretty difficult in some places. Great trail for intermediate bikers because of the difficulty parts. It stops by lots of cities and parks so you dont have to do the whole thing or turn around half way. Takes about 4-6 hours depending on how good of a biker you are. I would recommend it to anybody.

This trail runs right by where I live. It goes from Great Falls down to the Occuquan Reservoir (from north to south across the county). It links up to trail systems in Great Falls Nat'l Park, Difficult Run Park, Little Difficult Run Park, Fountainhead, and other parks. It also links up to the WO&D trail which links up to other offroad trail systems. In my opinion, this is a pretty nice trail network, especially when you consider how populated the areas surrounding the trail are. Has a good mix of singletrack with decent climbs, downhill runs, stream crossings, and rock gardens mixed with some fireroads. It is pretty rooty and can be extremely muddy during certain times of the year. It is generally well maintained. Probably one of the better and more accessible trails in close proximity to DC.

Rode form Colvin Mill to Great falls and back (about 10 miles). Was a great time....Had some good challenges, lots of mud, and would consider it a great trail for someone getting into the sport.
