This is a cool little trail system right in the middle of town. I wish that we had something like this where I live.

This is a great trail area. You can either stay on the roads or hit the single track. Be careful and watch out for runners and small children on bikes though- that would be the only downside. You can really get a workout here and there are some fast little downhill sections as well.

Park at Percival's Island, ride under the Rivermont bridge to the single track.

During this past summer, I rode my mountain bike (its safe to say) every single day. about half way through, with about five weeks left, a friend of mine introduced me to the trail.(he rides it every day to work rather than using a car) since then, and before school started back up, i was on the trail playing aroung for at least 20 miles each day, and for the rest of the summer, when i couldnt ride any more (because of school) i ended up with about 430 miles worth of trail that i had ridden on that trail. this is one trail that does not get old, plus, with so many side trails and other places to go, it seems like you never hit it all. this is one reason i like to keep going back. i recommend it for anybody of any age that just wants to ride, or if they want to go serious, or just to get somewhere, there are trails for all your reasons.

I started way up old forest road at a body shop behind lynchburg Nissan named Blue Ridge Collision (where my parents work) and i road down the Old forest rd. to the end, cut across the grass in front of the Greek orthidox church, and road the trail on and off all the way to the bridges that connect madison heights and appomattox. then back. this gave me about 20 miles and when finished, my 70 ounce camelback was just short of dry.(but thats just me)

this network of trails is chock full of hidden treasure- you really have to look around to find the singletrack but it's fun in a small scale, nice and level and fast. there's even an old railroad tunnel, tracks have been removed but you kind of have to ride into the dark trusting that you'll see the other end by the time it's pitch black inside. recently the local club added a pedestrian bridge which crosses the james river and gives an extra mile or so onto percivals isle.. nice trails

This short little trail about 3.5miles of single track, is so sweet I ride here often. You can fly on it, I mean speeds > 15 mph. Some of the local "extreme" boys have added a few sections that would make those BC guys stop and smile (3 foot drop offs, 10 foot creek jumps). Whats so cool about this trail is that it is smack dab in the middle of the city and you would never know it.

Great paved (mostly) trail for beginners with a few cool singletracks here and there (one is on Percival's Island...on your right after your go under the Carter Glass [Expressway] Bridge). Bring a good headlight if you're going through the tunnel, and be prepared to get a little wet (puddles 2"-4" deep inside). Parking is available behind the Greek Orthodox Church on Langhorne Road, at Hollins Mill, and at Percival's Island.

Customer Service

I get on the Blackwater Creek Trail at Hollins Mill, ride upstream until I reach the railroad bed, turn left, go through the tunnel, ride the grade down to Jefferson Street, cross the James River onto Percival's Island, and come back.

This is a 6.5 mile paved trail made from an old railroad line. There is an aproximately a 3/4 mile section in the middle of the 6.5 miles where you will be riding on Jefferson Street. This is not a heavy traffic area, but practice the rules of the road and be safe. Also there are many dirt trails all along the route that provide alternatives to the pavement. A few are closed to bike traffic so read the signs at each trailhead. Also, if you don't feel challenged enough, see how many times you can ride up and down the uphill street where Blackwater Creek trail meets Jefferson street at the top of the stairway.

Next are the existing railraod tracks you must cross before coming to the Percival's Island parking area. I have been stopped by a train twice so far (once up to 35 minutes) but usually don't even see trains while riding.

On to Percival's Island......
*CAUTION* What I think is the most dangerous spot on the trail is the hard right hander onto the first bridge that goes from Lynchburg to Percival's Islands. We share the trail with walkers, runners, fishermen, rollerbladers, skaterboarders and more importantly small children and animals. I can't count the times that I was glad that I went wide at that turn to see what was coming off the bridge BEFORE I rode onto it.

Anyway ride on and the next bridge takes you from Percival's Island on into Amherst County. You ride till you come to a split-rail fence with a bench. You say you want something a little extra? You folks out there with Fat Trax can ride past the fence till you come to a power substation and keep straight. You get on about a 1/4 mile dual track 4X4 trail that dead-ends at the river.

Now it's time to head back! Enjoy! And explore those singletracks!!!

Customer Service

I ride this trail 4-6 times a week. I usually ride 25-35 miles per day. I like to park at the Percival's Island entrance. I usually ride P.I. first then go to Blackwater Creek trail to the Greek Orthodox Church and back. The reason being, whether you ride toward the church using the main trail or using the Hollins Mill section, you get the uphill out of the way first. Blackwater Creek is slightly inclined when travalling from the river toward the church. Hollins Mill has a moderate serpentine hillclimb that's steeper. But guaranteed you'll pedal alot easier or even coast alot more leaving the church and heading back toward Percival's Island.

While vacationing in Virginia I road this trail two times and found some great little single track sections that I could ride with my wife. Somehow I ended up on some of the best single track in the park that turned out to be for hiking only. They need to open these trails up to bikers, seems I was not the only one who found them to be fun for riding with the tracks that were on the dirt. Great place for novice and intermediate riders to go that is very close to town.
